Anyone got tips on easy cosmoline removal? I've scrubbed most of it off but it seems like it comes out of nowhere when I'm not looking!

What I usualy do is take the stock off,put it into a plastic bag and put it in the back of the car for a few days-(that's when its warm and sunny out) The heat bleeds the oil out and you wipe it down.May take a couple of times depending how soaked it is.
As far as the rest I use mineral spirits and let it soak overnight in a plastic trough.Next day scrub away with brushes and use picks to get into the tight spots-the stuff turns almost like concrete in those areas so a good cleaning will be needed.I've also used the parts washer at work for the smaller parts-pretty much the same stuff.
Byt be sure to tear apart the bolt and get in there as well as the chamber,i'tll act like bad headspacing when you go shoot it
Make sure you clan it in a well ventilated area-dont want to get dizzy and pass out! ;)
Good luck and post up some pics when your done :)
I asked my Dad about that when I bought my SKS. He said to take it over to the mess hall and run it through the dish washer. I didn't have any mess halls or dish washers near by so I did the next best thing... I took them to the local car wash. I used the pressure washer on all the big parts. The little parts I cleaned with MEK.

disassemble, 5 gallon bucket, all the small parts in the bottom. Blast the receiver and barrel with one can of gun scrubber/break cleaner. scrub with toothbrush in nooks and crannies. scrub small parts in bottom of bucket. Repeat procedure with 2nd can of gun scrubber. Day two, do it all over again. Mineral spirits on the stock. Reassemble after oiling.
Go shoot it.
start process all over again week two...
I hate cosmoline.

I hate cosmoline.
Perhaps but you'd likely hate that 60-80 year old milsurp rifle even more WITHOUT the cosmoline.

Guess how many 60-80 year old milsurp rifles I have owned in my life?
I did the bake in sun in a bag followed by a cocktail of mineral spirits and other stuff. Ended up stripping the wood stock but I revarnished it and came out nice followed by some layers of tung oil.
To this day despite all that, if it's summer and I've been shooting it heavily, still get it coming a bit out of the stock as well as a bunch stuck in the sliding part of the bayo. (No way to get into it and clean that part, seems to be pretty water tight.)

I always used my baking oven for the stocks. set at 180-200 and just wipe it down every hour for a couple of days. For the bayo issue I would just heat it up in the oven and used carb cleaner on it while it was soft. [Flower]
