View Full Version : Senate Votes to Repeal Indefinite Detention
WASHINGTON (AP) — The Senate has revived a divisive debate over civil liberties and the president's powers as commander in chief, voting that Americans citizens suspected of terrorism and seized on U.S. soil may not be held indefinitely.
A coalition of liberal Democrats and libertarian Republicans backed an amendment to a sweeping defense bill that said the government cannot detain a U.S. citizen or legal resident indefinitely without charge or trial even with the authorization to use military force or a declaration of war.
The 67-29 vote late Thursday was on a measure sponsored by Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., chairwoman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, and Sens. Rand Paul, R-Ky., and Mike Lee, R-Utah. The strong bipartisan approval sets up a fight with the House, which rejected efforts to bar indefinite detention when it passed its bill in May.

Even the idea of indefinite detention without trial is terrifying and should never have even been brought up. I hope it goes away very soon.

Totally agree. It's about time something good came out of the Senate.
It's a start. Lets hope it's not that last reasonable piece of legislation to get passed .
Been doing some more reading and found that its a step in the right direction but has some problems with it.

So, lemme see if I understand this... (I claim no political party. If the person stands as I do on the issues, I support that person. Not the party.)
The evil doer Dems/Liberals actually AGREE with something we all want... But now, this thing we want is in danger of being shot down by the Conservative/Republicans we all so heavily support?
The guy that's ALWAYS late to work was on time today... The guy that never calls in sick, did... And the LT was actually in a good mood today...
Holy crap. I think it happened... Hell has finally forzen over.
Glad it happened. Hopefully repealing the "Patriot" Act is next.

You guys can thank the tireless work of Mr. Rand Paul for this.

The GOP recently shut down a bill that would make it easier to shoot on national forest lands; "On principle," because it was written by a Dem. I didn't like everyone bitching about obstructionism the past few years, but it's pretty clear now that they intend to vote against every bill put forth by a Dem, regardless of whether or not they agree with it.

Something is wrong with the Republican Party when Barbara Boxer will cross the aisle to vote with them.

This Amendment that Paul co-sponsored does nothing.
Yay they repealed it just in time for next year's bill to go through.

Something smells fishy. It doesn't look like a fish, but it smells like a fish, tastes like a fish. It must be fish tacos. Dianne Feinstein has never ever in her 20+ years in the Senate or Mayor of San Fransisco ever voted to stand up for Gun rights or the rights and liberties of Citizens. In fact she is the biggest gun grabber in the history of our government. So when she sponsors a bill at the same time she is hollaring for more gun control I would be skeptical it's in our best interest, no matter how many Paul's sign on.
