My boss got a bottle for his wedding and gave me a glass, Ive been hooked since. I'm also a fan of Dalwhinnie, but its a little harder to find. Its funny, I drink all my Macallan through George Dickel White label glasses. Its all I have on my desk at work.

Scotch: Laphroaig
Bourbon: Maker's Mark
Can't afford scotch so I've been drinking more bourbon lately (that and I had 3 different kinds of mint growing in pots on the patio so I went on a Mint Julep kick this summer).

Ive heard a lot of good things about Laphroaig. I think its in the top 5 best scotches. That has to be a pricey bottle.

there was a place in Wurzburg, DE that you could buy 18y scotch straight from the cask, it was the best scotch i've ever had....i can't remeber the name of it though
Try out the Breckenridge bourbon whiskey, good stuff.

Jameson and Stranahans are my top two. A good buddy of mine brought back a 18y distill edition from Ireland and that was VERY VERY GOOD. ** A nice treat
Stranahans is great. kind of a Single Barrel Jack meets Woodford Reserve combo. One that I pair with a nice Cuban/Dominican Cigar on any given day.
Any cigar smokers? ;)

Basil Hayden's is the shiznit.
I've also been digging the Ri1 lately. Yeah, I know, it's a Jim Beam product but just the same it's pretty good rye.
And every cigar will be cheaper online than at a store. Nothing wrong with a storefront as a place to put your feet up and smoke your purchase with a book for a few hours, but one way is definitely cheaper than the other.
I've never seen an Acid over $10. I don't think I've even seen a Drew Estate over $10.
I've never seen an acid over 8 but we do have havana manor in Ltown. I'm going to be truthful and admit I normally drink canadian mist. Even when I get a bonus or a big commission check I still drink canadian mist. Sometimes I will "splurge" for a 1.75 @ costco for 47 bucks or a 750 of stranahans... But my goto liquor in the winter is canadian mist and coke.

I don't get the attraction to Stranahan's. I think it's one of the harshest whiskeys I've ever tasted. And at $50+ per bottle? Forget it. I bought a bottle, had one shot and gave it away.
I stick to Buffalo Trace and Bulleit.

Wow. There are so many. As a general mixing beverage I prefer Jack Daniels and it is great for just sipping, Jefferson's Reserve is excellent for sipping and has some initial bite with a sweet orange finish I like very much. I like scotches for drinking straight (over ice or with water) and single malts are my favorites because of their distinctiveness in flavor over blends. They are my preferred drink with cigars. I would suggest that you do a little research on the various regions because there are wide differences in taste from region to region. 12 years or older tend to be smoother. Most will be in the $45 to $75 range.
My experience is that any whiskey that comes in a "Wine" bottle ain't worth the time.

There are establishments that will occasionally do whiskey tasting and education sessions. Up here in Ft. Collins, Wilbur's Total Beverage work with various restaurants, brewers, wineries and distillers and have "guided" tasting and spirit educational events. Finding a place near you that hosts these events will go a long way to helping you to start out the right way for finding the taste that you like.

Bourbon: Maker's Mark
Scotch: Laphroaig
I used to prefer Scotch, but in recent years I've found myself drifting into the Bourbon camp. Not gonna turn down either though. Honestly think the thing that kept me away from Bourbon for so many years was Jack Daniels ... there's an odd little flavor just below the surface with Jack that I really don't like.

I did a Bourbon tasting a while back and discovered I like Rye based whiskeys. I'm a fan now of Bullit Rye, mostly because it's cheap at the COS Costco.
It would be easier to list the whiskeys I don't like. The only one that comes to mind is Jim Beam. Ugh.

What is the infatuation with Pappy Van Winkle? 7000 cases a year. 5-14 year waiting lists. The "old" unsold bourbon stock is drying/dried up, so look for the availability to be even less in the near future. Not saying it isn't good but it is unobtainium. I'll stick with something a little more accessible.

-how does Breckenridge Bourbon compare to the various other brands being discussed here? I seem to recall someone posting a few promotional video's for it a while back that were amusing.
Breckenridge tastes damn good in my opinion and compares well. If you all want to try something good take a look at Peach Street Distillers out of Palisade, they make a good bourbon, and not to change the subject but kick ass agave also ;-)

Not quite as smooth IMHO. Maybe a hint of something as a slight aftertaste- cinnamon maybe.
My default bourbon is Maker's Mark. I find that I like most quality bourbons.
For scotch, it's The Balvenie. The high-end blended Johnnie Walker's are nice, but I can't afford to drink them or many of the older high-end single malts.

All this talk about whisky prompted me to go pick up some Colorado Crown, and apparently I'm not the only one loving it, tried 4 different stores and they are all sold out!
I'm not much of a drinker at all anymore, and certainly not a whiskey conniseur. But I've read some reviews about Stranahan's being good stuff, and I have a strange desire to try some.....worth the effort/cost or not? I'd probably only need one drink on the rocks at some bar to satisfy my curiosity. One drink will do me for a year or more. Unless we're talking margaritas or gin & tonic.....but even those are very rare.

Well I wimped out and picked up my triannual 1.75L bottle of Maker's today instead of trying the Buffalo Trace (but this is mostly because they didn't have the 1.75L size bottles at the liquor store, only the 750ml size). Maybe I'll look around this spring for the big bottle of BT.

It doesn't really help since you're in Parker, but the Glenn up here in Northglenn keeps Stranahan's in stock, and that's where I get my fix.

If you find a bar to pour you one on the rocks it might be worth it to try that way. But at 60 a bottle it'd be a huge waste if you didn't like it. I think it's decent, but it isn't 60 a bottle good. I'd rather get a 10 or 12+ year scotch with that kind of money. Or 4 bottles of a Canadian whiskey to mix with ginger ale or Sprite.

Say, now there's an idea! And $60 a bottle? Jesus..... I'm really becoming a COB in my old age, I started to get a bottle of Tanqueray gin a few weeks ago and passed because it was $21.99. Anybody else like Fireside? I just got some and find it quite good.
Got some fireside for christmas. Good enoigh for me and I like it better than the makers mark we drank christmas eve. The fireside is a bit rough, so I've been adding 1-2 drops of bitters.

Couldn't find the "last" whiskey thread and I didn't want the repost police all up in my shiznizel.
Any Mods want to combine whiskey threads? [panic]
Ohhh Fireside stay away from that sh!t. A friend gave me a bottle, said it was comparable to Breckendridge...not even close@*!&!^%!
Spend the cash, I think Fireside was $18, and get your yourself a good bottle.
Hell Buffalo Trace is a good bang for the buck too, especially for Bourbon smashes, my favorite drink of late.
Fireside is comparable to Stranahan, but priced appropriately.

No really. I like Fireside.
As much as bourbon/whiskey is the same, there are a lot of differences. Hype aside, I'll sit down with a tumbler of Old Crow or Ten High just as often as Buffalo Trace or Fireside. Depends on my mood.

I've been enjoying the Jim Beam Honey myself. Put it in the freezer first to chill it, it goes down nice and smooth. I also like their maple (though not quite as much).

My normal bourbon is Elijah Craig which I love! Went to the liquor store the other week and they didn't have any, so I tried Templeton Rye Prohibition Whiskey. I must say it is awesome and will buy that again!
Figured this should go here.

Beam being acquired by Japan's Suntory
By CANDICE CHOI and BRUCE SCHREINER
Associated Press
NEW YORK (AP) -- The maker of classic American whiskeys Jim Beam and Maker's Mark has agreed to be acquired by a Japanese company in a $13.62 billion deal that would create the third largest global premium spirits business.
Shares of Beam Inc. rose 24 percent on Monday after it said that it agreed to be purchased by Suntory Holdings Ltd., a Japanese beverage company. The combined company would have annual sales of more than $4.3 billion.
The deal follows other recent acquisitions in the alcohol industry, including Anheuser-Busch InBev's $20.1 billion deal last year to buy the other half of Mexican brewer Grupo Modelo that it didn't already own.
It also comes at a time when the taste for bourbon - a type of American whisky that is made primarily of corn and typically distilled in Kentucky - continues to grow domestically and abroad.
In the U.S., sales volume for bourbon and Tennessee whiskeys such as Jack Daniels has grown 26 percent over the past decade, according to the Distilled Spirits Council, and industry group. Exports of U.S. whiskeys has grown to roughly $1 billion last year, more than double what it was a decade ago.
Demand is so robust that Beam last year even considered reducing the alcohol content for Maker's Mark because of a supply shortage. The company scrapped the idea after a backlash by fans of the higher-end bourbon.
"We're basically in the middle of a global whiskey renaissance," said Frank Coleman, a spokesman for the Distilled Spirits Council.
Suntory and Beam already had a relationship. Suntory distributes Beam products in Japan and has a portfolio of spirits with whiskies, including Yamazaki and Hakushu as well as Midori liqueur and other beverages. And Beam, which is based in Deerfield, Ill., distributes Suntory's products in Singapore and other Asian markets.
Suntory President and Chairman Nobutada Saji said in a statement that the acquisition will help Suntory further its global growth. In recent years, Suntory has also purchased French beverage maker Orangina Schweppes Group and GlaxoSmith Kline's Lucozade and Ribena drinks.
Beam spokesman Clarkson Hine said for now, the deal will result in few changes for fans of Beam's bourbons. He also said that Beam, which was spun off as a stand-alone liquor company in 2011 from conglomerate Fortune Brands Inc., will continue with its current management.
"It's business as usual," Hine said, noting that Suntory has indicated it wants the company to "keep doing what we're doing."
Allen Adamson, managing director of Landor Associates, a New York-based branding firm, said Beam can gain a competitive advantage from being part of bigger company with deeper pockets. He said that ownership by a foreign company shouldn't hurt the All-American images of Beam's brands.
"The trick is to maintain its authenticity, and not muck with the core elements," he said.
Suntory will pay $83.50 per share, a 25 percent premium to Beam's Friday closing price of $66.97. The companies put the deal's value at about $16 billion, including debt.
Suntory plans to fund the deal with available cash and fully committed financing from The Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ. Both companies' boards unanimously approved the transaction, which is targeted to close in the second quarter.
The deal needs approval from Beam Inc. stockholders.
Shares of Beam rose $16.14 to $83.11.

Had some Willet with the father in law over the holidays. That was some pretty good bourbon right there. Wish I could afford it on a regular basis.

Picked up some Fireside. Not bad, gonna go back to buffalo trace but it is a Colorado brand so it is good to support in state business.

Got myself a bottle of Tin Cup. Good stuff at a decent price.
I was told by a liquor store employee that Tin Cup is made by the people that started Stranahan's, sold that, and then started Tin Cup. I agree that it is pretty good and definitely a decent price.
Stranahans was purchased by Proximo Beverage. Looks like Tin Cup is also owned by PB.
Edit: My Google Fu was weak last night.

I tried some Dickel's No. 1 the other night. I kind of picture e85 tasting similar. (I kid, it was actually pretty damn smooth for the corny aftertaste and high proof rating).
