View Full Version : Barrel ideas, 13.5"

I'm planning to customize a Colt LE6920. I would like to shorten the barrel to 13.5" and perm-attach a longish flash suppressor (3.175" OAL, 2.5" effective length).

My conundrum is the barrel markings. If I shorten the Colt barrel, it would completely remove the "C MP 5.56 NATO 1/7" markings. I know that's not a functional problem, but I'd like to keep those to preserve some potential resale value. (Like anybody else would ever want a 13.5" Colt barrel with oddball flash suppressor permanently attached.)

I wonder if I could find an equivalent or better barrel, say 14.5" length, with markings located to allow cutting to 13.5" without obliterating them.

Thanks for any ideas or input.

Just save the whacked off piece to show the person interested as proof of what the barrel is, er, ah, was....[Tooth]

I have a PSA barrel (hammer forged, made by FN) and the markings are between the breech and the gas port.

I thought about that, but to me, a loose piece of an apparently "destroyed" barrel would not be very convincing.

I checked out PSA, and they were out-of-stock in the profile/length that I want.

I did some more digging, and found pics of Daniel Defense and other CHF barrels with markings in the area you mentioned. That would be ideal, if I could talk myself into spending another $250 or so on this build. I guess I could sell the whole Colt barrel to offset some of that cost.

Thanks for the tips.

You think about resale value but want to cut the "Colt" bbl down???????????????? Once you put the cutter to the bbl it has no value. Just buy a 14.5" bbl and call it good. Your Colt still has value, to someone, you have a shorter bbl and everyone's happy.

Good point. Instead of "some potential," I should have said "even the slightest remotely possible" resale value.

I'm just curious. Since you are going to pin something to the barrel and make it a legal 16" anyways, why not just go with a 14.5" and find a muzzle device that tickles your fancy and pin it on?

Here's mine....

I'm going for a shorter look than most of of the 14.5" barrel and 1.5" muzzle devices I've seen. I think a bit shorter barrel and longer muzzle device will give me the look I'm after. I just hope the weight of the muzzle device doesn't make the rifle too unwieldy.

Eventually, I will get a legitimate SBR and suppressor setup, after I decide on the trust or LLC question.

I'm not familiar with that unit. What is it?

This is the one I have in mind now.

The smith vortex is pretty old school. Check out the Primary Weapons System "Triad" when you get a chance.
