View Full Version : Bob Costas just blamed the KC Chiefs death on handguns

On Sunday Night Foot ball Bob Costas just gave speech quoting an article by Jason Whitlock stating that if handguns were not so prolific that the Jevon Belcher and his girlfriend would still be alive. Unbelievable...

Beat me to it. INFURIATING! What the F*&K! If he'd have slit her throat and stabbed himself in the chest with a steak knife, would he be advocating for the ban of Chicago Cutlery!!!??? Not that bob's one to respect, but any i might have had for him is toast. And to use Sunday Night Football as a podium for a politically charged topic like that is simply pathetic.

Did anyone else just catch the halftime show? Saying gun owners escalate situations! Worst part said was "if Jovan belcher didn't posses a firearm that both Him and his girlfriend would be alive. Got to be kidding me Fox!

mackbamf
12-02-2012, 21:08
Yes, he just dropped some knowledge that our society is relying too much on handguns to solve problems, saying that this is how disputes over loud music coming from cars is resolved. Straight up said that if Belcher didn't have a gun that he wouldn't have killed her or himself and would still be alive...

It's the gun's fault! But wait! Where's the outrage over bows and arrows and knives following the campus attack in Casper Wyoming last week? Come on Bob! Show us your true colors! Go there and prove to your self that you COULD have an original thought in your patsy cranium that doesn't align with the sheeple!

Acutually, something just occured to me. I THINK Bob said he doesn't agree with Whitlock all the time, but this time he did. Hmmm....... Nope. Doesn't matter. Take your uneducated, biased, Brady Bunch talking points over to PMSNBC and drop dead.

I levitated out of my chair when I heard what Bob Costas was reading on the teleprompter. Jason Whitlock is a tool - sport's authority, general loud mouth & overall know it all.

It certainly doesn't hurt getting kids from predominantly urban area after growing up with next to nothing, giving them a basket-weaving equiv. college educations and then giving them millions of dollars in pro-pay. Then we put them up on pedestals and call them "heroes". They're no better at dealing with the significant culture shock than most of the hip-hop/rap artists finding themselves in a similar situation. When you add performance enhancing drugs and physical injuries on top of that, it's a recipe for disaster, regardless of the tools they use to make their point.

Was the gun he used registered to him, was he in legal possession of the firearm? All the fun facts that Costas didn't present, and I still haven't heard anything about what was the impetus for the guy killing his gf, and himself.

Just sent this to NBC Sports:

Good morning,
As a professional in the firearms industry I find Mr Costas statements during halftime to be wholly reprehensible, reckless and irresponsible.
Why is it uninformed and ignorant individuals and organizations continue to put blame on a mechanical device for a human beings actions?
Mr Belcher clearly had other problems beside owning a firearm.
How about Mr Costas retract his ill informed and ignorant statements and address the real issue?
That issue would be the mental health and substance abuse issues that seem to run so very rampant in the NFL.
I would be happy to discuss this matter with Mr Costas or any other party concerned.
Thank you for your consideration and feel free to contact me.

Has anyone seen Bob's response?

http://www.usatoday.com/story/gameon/2012/12/04/how-bob-costas-really-feels-about-guns-jovan-belcher-suicide-kansas-city-chiefs/1745491/

Here are some of the gems:

"Why do you need a semi automatic weapon? What possible use is there?"

Hey Bob, we don't need you to determine a valid use to decide if we get to exercise our Second Amendment rights, just like no one determines if you need a microphone to exercise your First Amendment rights. But more to the point, you're taking the soapbox regarding a murder-suicide, for which the murderer used two different guns, hours apart. That could have been done with a musket.

""There are people who honestly believe that in Aurora (Colo.) if only a dozen or so people there to watch the Batman movie had been packin', they would have been able to take down the nut job in full body armor with military-type guns."

One of the things that opponents of concealed carry frequently wring their hands about is that another shooter in the mix could make things worse. This event put that concern to rest. There is no possible way that an armed citizen could have made things worse. We have often seen that these types of shooters, when faced with armed resistance, turn and run. But most critical to this comment is parroting the inaccurate statement that the shooter wore body armor. The anti-gunners love that idea, because they can use it against concealed carry, but it's simply not true.

------

The real bad thing about this isn't that I disagree with what Costas said, though I obviously do, but that he took a completely apolitical event, a football game, and made a political statement that is guaranteed to offend at least half the country, and probably more than half of his viewing audience.

Ronin13
12-04-2012, 16:46
Wreave, you left out the most important part of that quote- what he had said before it- because it's an obvious point from Costas that shows he doesn't know dick about the 2nd Amendment:
""Here's where I stand: I do not want to see the second amendment repealed. ... People should be allowed to own guns for their own protection. Obviously, those who are hunters. ... Access to guns is too easy in some cases. I don't see any reason a citizen should be able to arm himself in some states in ways only police or military should — to have a virtual militia (bought by) mail order or gun shows. Why do you need a semi-automatic weapon? What possible use is there? ... Whitlock wrote about a gun culture. That's what I was focusing on (in the halftime segment)."
Personally, I think Costas is a fucking moron. I agree that he shouldn't have used the SNF game for a platform for his idiotic and narrow minded view.

My big wish is that people, especially people in the media would have semblance of an understanding what "semi-automatic" means. I continuously see it misused time and time again. He mentions hunters...I know a whole slew of hunters with semi automatic rifles and shotguns.

To be honest, while I don't agree with him at all, I respect his right to speak his mind. I just wish he wasn't so incredibly ignorant on the subject. I also do not want to even go down the rabbit hole of what if scenarios of the Aurora incident, but imagine he didn't have a shitty drum mag, or if he had been using a shotgun with slugs...or just a ruger 10/22. It just infuriates me to no end when people are ignorant and state things as if they are facts.

A gun is like a chainsaw, both are tools, both require training and understanding of their function to use properly. Lack of these two factors are the greatest threat to everyone.

My thoughts exactly. The media has no idea that yes, average folks can get body armor, but it's pretty expensive. IIRC, wasn't the Aurora guy wearing an LBV or something similar?

I previously thought Costas was fairly intelligent and a balanced individual. Now I know better. First of all, what the hell is he injecting left wing politics into a football game for? Second, it seems the libs are really feeling their oats after Beeho's victory and coming out of the woodwork to preach their ideology - I expect that to continue nonstop for the next few years, at least. Third - Costas' clarifying comments today actually made it worse, not better. If he feels semi-automatic firearms should not be owned by lawful citizens, I guess he would be comfortable with us only owning single shots, bolt actions, lever actions, pumpers, and revolvers. A well-trained shooter with most of those can fire awfully fast. He also feels citizens should not own firearms as powerful as those used by LE or military. Our founders sure wouldn't agree, since unless one had comparable firepower it could be difficult to stand up to extreme tyranny. Of course, liberals have epileptic conniptions when you bring up the "tyranny" argument - since they view government as the source of all that is good. Lastly, Costas seems to be unaware of all of the good self-defense shootings that regularly occur - of course you won't see any of them mentioned on his pet station NBC.

I get so tired of hearing the anti-gun nuts talk about how no CCers would have made any good difference in Aurora. Obviously, they have no way of knowing. However, I can say that Holmes had surprise on his side, but was at a serious situational awareness disadvantage in the dark and wearing a gas mask. Having worn masks many times, I can say that in almost all models I have tried - especially those with separate eyepieces - you have almost no peripheral vision. Given a strong possibility of limited night vision due to weapon muzzle blast, I doubt he could see much at all. A determined CCer approaching from the side I believe probably would have succeeded in taking Holmes down. Of course, we will never know that for sure, either.
