Hello Fellows,

I have a question which I know I have asked before (and someone answered thoroughly) but I can't remember what I was told.

If a gun is DA/SA and it also has a thumb safety (for example an H&K or CZ):
1) does the shooter have to start the stage with the hammer decocked and the safety "on"?
2) or can they start with the hammer down and no safety?
3) or, can they choose to shoot ESP and start with with the hammer cocked and safety "on"?

Thanks!
-Cy

PS: Whatever the answer is, is this the case for both IDPA and IPSC?

IDPA. For Stock Service Pistol the hammer must be lowered to enable a DA first shot. The safety does not have to be on if the hammer is lowered. Same with IPSC Production.

IDPA. For Enhanced Service Pistol the gun can start with the hammer back and the safety on. Same with IPSC Limited and Limited-10.

#1. No.
#2. Yes.
#3. Yes.

What is the current class for the XD's.
ESP or have they been allowed in SSP.
All I can find is unsupported comments about ESP.
I'd appreciate a definative answer if available, because I have been asked by new shooters.
The existing rule book does not address this issue directly.
Thanks

apologies if this is considered a hijack

ESP. It is a single action pistol. It may have a "Glock-like" trigger safety and a striker, but when the slide is closed, the striker is fully cocked.

Hoser,
Thanks, I understand how XD's work, just needed somebody in IDPA to offically confirm ESP.
