View Full Version : What should I throw in my bag?
So, thought I would throw some stuff into my favorite backpack and keep it handy around the 21st of this month. Just in case.
I'm not really the "prepper" type so I just planned on throwing in most of the stuff I usually take camping- a couple of knives, some fire starting stuff, some paracord, a small first aid kit, a bottle of water or two, energy bars, and some spare magazines and ammunition.
Is there anything else I should consider throwing in there?
Thanks.

Damn, should have brought it up when we were at CRC. I had mine in the back of the truck. It's kind of a all-in-one bag and I carry it in case I have to walk home from any of the various events I go to all over the place. Many of them, like fly fishing in the mountains, would be quite a walk. So, this might be bigger than you might want but it will give you some ideas.

Water balloon fight!
No TV at our house Ray. We toss the food in the middle of the room and watch the kids fight the dogs for it. To the Victor goes the Spuds!

Just don't bring Cheetos.
That is inappropriate whilst staying at someone's house.

I am going to keep this outfit in the car. Nobody will mess with a crazy blind preacher wandering about town. Should be no problem to make it home from work.

Small first aid kits usually equate to a boo-boo kit. Kerlix and / or an Israeli bandage is always a good idea for more serious issues. Things that have multiple uses always seem to get the nod in my bag. A SAM splint, a bandana, chap stick, wool scarf or extra socks would be a few good examples.
Another thing I like for the aid kit is petroleum gauze.

Aside from the first aid uses, you can always cut a slit on one of the faces, pull just a little bit out and use it as a candle. A good leatherman type tool is always worth it's weight in the pack.
I always keep a new bic lighter and wrap it with a bunch of duct tape (or wrap duct tape around a water bottle). Zip ties are light and handy for attaching things to the outside of your pack (among a zillion other uses). No reason not to get an emergency blanket. Very light and small, but very effective.
Lots of good info in this thread. Lots of the things mentioned can be improvised if you need them too (like paracord - you can make darn good cordage from yucca plants, wal-mart bags, et cetera). But it's easier to just have 100 feet of 550 cord on you. There are dozens of ways to start a fire, but that bic lighter is the easiest and pretty darn dependable (if it's cold, put it in your pocket for a minute to warm it up).
I'll think of some more stuff in a bit.
cheaper just to do pj cotton balls than the med ones which are mostly useless for med stuff

Just illustrating a point. Like I said, a lot of stuff can be improvised. I had a guy give me a bunch of this stuff. Your budget / your bag...
The petroleum gauze would be great for a sucking chest wound.

I agree with your point though.

Took a class where the guy used a doritos bag for a sucking chest wound. Like most things, the software between your ears is more important than the hardware.

KISS. Food, water, heat, light, security, shelter, first aid, sanitation, communications.
The details of each are up to you. Everything else is gravy.
Oh, and if you're planning for a sucking chest wound, forget the bag. You're going to have bigger problems.

Can't see dorito dust being sanitary, maybe it's a clotting agent?

He was just using the foil from the bag. The point was knowing what the right way looks like and being able to improvise if it's not available. The context of the class was wilderness first aid and getting back to civilization. The person has to survive the wound first, worry about infection later. The instructor was simply looking around the room to find something he could use in an emergency. Doritos bag was what he picked.
