View Full Version : How much are the Obama's costing us?
Interesting perspective... Glenn Beck (love him, hate him, whatever) makes a great point here... In 2011 it cost the people of the UK $57.8 million (adjusted to US currency). But really, how much do we spend on our "royal" family? Would you be surprised if it was $50 million? $100 million? Not even close... so how much do we spend on the Obama's in a year (calculated 2011 total)?
I hope you're sitting down...
$1.4 BILLION!
Yes, billion, with a B. So let's get this straight, the British people spend $57.8 million on their royal family- shelter, food, travel, security, etc... but Barry and Moochelle, and their two kids, are costing us, the taxpayers, $1.4 Billion... That's over 24 times what the UK spends. WTF? [facepalm]I'm curious to know how much, on average, a year it cost for the Bushs and the Clintons...
More here: http://www.glennbeck.com/2012/12/05/how-much-do-the-obama%E2%80%99s-cost-taxpayers/
The Messiah only comes around once so you can't be stingy! [facepalm] As long as he is still hanging out Obama phones I don't think the people will mind.

The royals are just figureheads, a better comparison is what they spend on the protection detail for the Prime Minister's family. That is still crazy, but apples to oranges.

A lot of those figures include securing the white house, which is used to conduct business other than just house the president and his family. I doubt that any other first world countries have had as many assassinations and attempts on the president as we have in the past two hundred years or so.

Flatline, really? There are quite a few countries that have had as many or more. Not to mention outright coups.

Flatline may have a point. Off the top of my head, we've had Lincoln, Garfield, McKinley and Kennedy assassinated with serious attempts made on Jackson, Theodore Roosevelt (although he wasn't President at the time), Ford and Reagan. Throw in the idiot who emptied his handgun at the White House from outside the fence if you want. That's 9 in 200 years. Who beats that?
Hmmm ... UK? Do you count Hitler's unguided V1 and V2 bombs? I seem to vaguely recall one attempt on Churchill but that's about it (Mountbatten wasn't PM or King/Queen so doesn't count).
France? Were there any other attempts or assassinations on Kings/Queens/PMs in the last 200 years other than Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette and the Dauphin?
Germany? Nope, can't think of any.
Even going outside the First World, Egypt has had 2 or 3?

But first world countries?
Either way- regardless of the points you all made... a lot of that $1.4 Billion is due to the Obamas spending money like they're the Jeffersons! "We're moving on up!"

Are you saying that because they're black, it sure sounds like it. Obama wasn't poor before his presidency.
How much did bush cost per year? I looked online but it seems that no one wanted to talk about that. I think the bigger issue would be the amount of money spent on the president. What if romney had won? He would have cost a lot too. Even if they had cut 10% away as discretionary spending (like vacations and golf), and I doubt it is even that much, we would still be spending 1.2-1.3 billion per year.
Look at it this way. Due to concerns about security the secret service goes through extreme measures to ensure that all of the proteins, fruits, vegetables, and other food products need to be free from contamination. They don't just go down to the local safeway to do their shopping.
People say how much obama likes to golf, what about when bush went for his jogs? I can only imagine the fuel costs alone when the secret service followed him every time. What if one of us were the president and wanted to go shooting, I doubt they just let you go to the local range.
The money spent on the president is a lot, probably too much. I don't think its an obama issue though, its more to do with the nature of how we accommodate and protect the presidency.
The Left complains about Republican presidents playing too much golf, and what it costs the nation.
The Right complains about Democrat presidents playing too much golf, and what it costs the nation.
It's clear, to me anyway, that the underlying problem, is golf. Outlaw golf and we'd all be better off.

...The question is, how much was spent on the Bush Family...

That's not what it's about at all. Bush was the preceding president, if we used clinton as the example you would be missing 8 years, and 8 years that have substantially changed the world and the way that presidential and national security work.
I don't know the statistics but I would bet that gw bush spend more than clinton, who spent more than gh bush, who spend more than reagen and so on even with inflation.

I would point out one major factor that many of these graphs don't take into account is how Democrats since Carter have basically raped defense spending forcing large corrective expenditures by the next President. Clinton wouldn't have been able to do what we did in the Balkans or elsewhere without the investments made during the Reagan/Bush years but he neglected to replenish or reinvest in military capability, Obama wouldn't have been able to do anything if Bush the Younger hadn't fixed Clinton's mess. This blind refusal to take care of one of the few federal expenditures specifically authorized by the Constitution creates a feast-famine effect which is unhealthy.

The more time they spend golfing, the less time they spend governing.
If we have to buy the bastards 18 holes at Pebble Beach every damn day, with a brand new set of clubs thrown in, it'll still be cheaper than when they're not on vacation.
