My friend (I know how it sounds but it really is my friend and not me) is having a dispute with his neighbor over my friend's dogs barking. I don't know who's in the right or in the wrong but I know they don't like each other and I'm sure that may have something to do with it. He lives in Highlands Ranch and it's not his next door neighbors, it's about 3 houses down.

The neighbor called the police on him for the 3rd time in a month and animal control asked the neighbor if he'd be willing to do in person mediation with the Sheriff's Department.

My question is; what is mediation with the Sheriff's Department in a case like this?

They will just come out and play referee for your friend and the complainant to have a "civil" discussion about the dog to see if some common ground can be worked out.

I'm with my friend on this one. I know he takes care of his dogs and doesn't leave them out for extended periods. It all started after the neighbor noticed him shooting at a rabbit with a pellet gun. From some web searches it appears his neighbor is a professor so my guess would be that he's anti gun.

Have his immediate neighbors write an opinion if they think his dog barks too much.

If they say no then he could tell the deputies that the harassment needs to stop. If his actual neighbors think his dog is annoying... well ..can't blame bias

I'm having the same problem in highlands ranch, but I got an invitation to meet the judge out of it. I have an older, retired neighbor who exaggerated each time he has called about how long my dog was outside and barking. The ordinance basically states if a dog barks once and it is a nuisance to someone, it is a ticketable offense.

Probably really not mediation.
It is called restorative justice, or "RJ".
Closer binding arbitration than anything.
I do have a neighbor with multiple dogs that sometimes bark for more than 5 hours straight at night.
It is what is being suggested in our case. Even though the barking is illegal, the sheriff's office is suggesting the RJ before issuing any more tickets.

Once again, dogs bark.Next time your "friend" hears the neighbors talking, call the cops. Dogs tall through barking. The neighbors are assholes. End of story. When my neighbors bitch, I bitch even louder!! You can always find something to bitch about! The Biscuit concurs......http://i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa351/tinelement/C79C5277-852B-481F-AB34-37414792CC66-504-00000042AFA568D0.jpg

Dogs bark
Stereos play
Babys cry
Guns go bang
ETC
Doesn't mean everyone wants to hear it at all hours of the day from the privacy of their own home.
OP prefaced the post with not sure who is right or wrong, but nobody should have to be annoyed by nusiance animals.

FTFY

I've heard of a case where my friends neighbor would go beat on the fence and intentionally incite the dogs, call from the yard so dispatch could hear the dogs barking. friend got wise and set up a camera.
The Dog owner sued him(Neighbor) for harassment, false witness, won a judgement for like 500K...
Then the county locked him(Neighbor) up for a year for abusing the 911 system, filing false reports, etc.

Barking dog thing can get ugly
cover your bases

Agreed...
Nuisance dogs belong to nuisance neighbors.

The problem is neighbors don't walk down to the house and say " hey, my name is __, Your dog is barking and keeping me awake. Can you take care of this for me?. Neighborhoods have no soul any longer Its just were people sleep. Expanded apartments, no sense of community.

That's the case with the dog by my house.

See above. What do I have to say to the piece of shit that NEVER lets the dog inside the house so I constantly have to hear it barking? They don't clean up the shit, and I have to smell it. Their house is trashed, they are trash. I can't imagine they will be open to discussion with me about how the dog they treat like crap, acts like crap.

Sounds like my new neighbors... Id hate to be the one that complains but Im getting damn close.... Their dog is never inside, barks for 45min+ straight while the people are inside.... dunno how they can tone it out but it drive me crazy. I cant even open my sliding glass door without setting off thier dog, let alone put my dogs outside.

This type of issues are big part of why we moved to the country. No worries about neighbors. I can barely hear the neighbors dogs or hot rods or shooting while outside and can not hear them at all inside our home. In the ten years since we have lived out here I have never complained about my neighbors(most all have become friends) and am not aware of any of them complaining about me.

IMO the majority of the ills of society are directly related to the fact that people live crowded on top of each other in cities. Get the hell out of the city was the answer for us.

When numerous neighbors have talked to the owners, numerous times and it falls on dead ears............................24/7 or even 3-4 hrs solid can be too much. especially after the owner was asked, politely, numerous times.

Of course the spousal unit (hypothetically)knocking on their door @ 4am and telling them to shut their fucking dogs up or she will, gets the point across
