Have an M44 that I picked up from Grandpa's Guns in Longmont a year or so ago. Haven't had much time to shoot until just recently; talk about wide left...
At any rate, I have a mount that I picked up from Tanner ($10, can you beat it)- will replace the rear sight, so I will need something along the lines of a pistol scope, long eye relief. Any thoughts or recommendations? Obviously, I'm not wanting to spend an arm and a leg on this...
Thanks

I'be heard M44's shoot better with the bayonet extended. Otherwise they're way off.

I have several mosins. Only my 91/30 is scoped. M44 recoil will knock cheap scopes out of whack every time. Not reliable, unless you spend the big bucks for a high end set-up. Even then, I am not sure there are LER choices out there that are designed for such recoil. As stated the 44 will shoot better with iron sights and the bayo extended, as it was designed to do. It was not intended to be an accurate long range shooter.
That said, if you want to try scoping it, I have had excellent results on my long rifle with a cheepo nc star long eye relief 4-12 zoom. Optics Planet had them for $25 or so. If you heat up the standard leaf sight base to melt the silver solder underneath, and gently tap the base with a brass hammer, you will find a nice dovetail mount under there. Appox 3/8", if I recall. Easy enough to find a scope mount that size. I got one from Wally World for about $5. Total expense was about $40. Eye relief is perfect, and it has a bit of parallax, but otherwise a surprisingly workable scope. After several hundred rounds, the mosin remains on 200m zero, and it shoots better than my Dad's Swede sniper. Consistent 1-2" at 200m. Different rifle with a very tame kick. If the recoil of the M44 is too much for the scope, it's easy to put it back to stock and you haven't spent much. Have fun!

If mine actually get delivered I found this that I might try. http://www.surplusrifle.com/reviews2006/mosinsniperproject/index.asp

You also would need to notch out the stock to fit the scope on.
But this is the way to go if you dont mind modding /altering your weapon. Some collectors would frown upon drilling into theirs.
This was also the way a lot of them were feild modifyd in the 50's

I have 2 coming in, so I figure one will get the scope treatment and the other will remain unaltered.

There are a variety of options. For mounts, I really like the Darrell's mount. Jmeck gets good reviews, as does the Brass Stacker (the one Nutnfancy uses, fwiw).

A good summary is here: http://mosinnagantscopemounts.com/

Yes, I forgot about that one. It's the ATI mount. Gets some good reviews as well. Google around, you'll find various reviews out there of all of them. Note that Darrell doesn't have a website, at least not that I know of. As has been said, it comes down to two choices: LER mount that replaces the rear sights, or co-witnesses with them, or ones that require some kind of installation and may/may not require a bent bolt.

rock solid ind makes one that is supposed to be great. It is a little pricey and requires drilling but might be the way I go

A couple weeks ago Big5 had some Mosin scopes, with mounts, for sale for about $65, might still be around.

I was just at the Golden Big 5 store and they had two mosin accessory kits.
Included Aim scope, picatinny rail, mounts, sling and a couple other pieces for ???
Marked price was $69.99, but they sell the kit for $65

May have to get a turned-down bolt...maybe not.
Noticed in the flic "Enemy at the Gates" the Russian sniper, Jude Law, was using a scoped Mosin, but had the turned-down bolt.
German sniper, Ed Harris, had a scoped Mouser.

That's not a bad price, I might have to check my local Big 5 or head up to Golden if the Aurora one doesn't have one. I have seen mixed reviews for the Aim scope, but in the end it's good for the price and a few decent shooters on youtube have plinked 500 yards pretty consistent with them.

<edit> (I just read the original post again, and this question is about a M44, so none of this below means shit now. But it's still good info for a Mosin 91/30.)

I took the rear sight assembly off my 91/30 and used the 3/8" dovetail that's on top of the barrel. Got a Leaper's mount for an air rifle from Optics Planet, and you can put any 1" LER type scope on there, although mine is a cheap p.o.s. from NcStar, which will likely be replaced.

The mount was only $15, and it's awesome for the price. They offer a different one with 3 screws for even better clamping power, and it's not offset, but it's longer and you'd have to modify the top handguard of the rifle for it to fit. Perfect mount though if you're building a sporter in a different stock. My mount requires no permanent mods to the rifle, and the rear sight will go right back on.

This dovetail is only on the long rifles like the 91/30's though, it's not on the M44's or M38's.

Pay attention to what you're ordering though, they have so many kinds. Some are 1", some are 30mm, some are low mount, some are medium, some are high, some have see-through bases. but they have a helluva selection, the quality is very good, and the prices can't be beat. You'll receive it very quickly too. http://www.opticsplanet.com/leapers-accushot-riflescope-mounts-rings-amp-bases.html

I personally would prefer the 3-screw mount without the offset, but they're 100mm long vs. the 62mm of this mount, and you'd have to cut off the rear of the handguard a little. Not an issue with an aftermarket stock though, and the 3-screw will clamp far tighter. This one would be the best, IMO, for an aftermarket stock. http://www.opticsplanet.com/leapers-accushot-premium-airgun-22-full-length-integral-medium-profile-mount-rgpm2pa.html

The one I have below is this one. 62mm long, low-mount, non see through, 1" rings. http://www.opticsplanet.com/leapers-airgun-22-1-bi-directional-offset-optimum-profile-mount-rgpmofs38-25h4.html

For the price, you'll be suspicious. But once it's in your hand you'll wonder how the hell they could make it for that price.

Rondog, thanks for posting that.I knew there was something out there about the dove tail, just couldnt remember where to find it.
Definitly makes it easier instead of drilling into the receiver.
Would be nice if the carbines were like that though.

I had a thought on maybe trying to solder on a small rail to the top to try and accomplish the same thing. But I would leave that to someone with tallents better than mine.My luck it would come out worse than Bubbas!!

That is sweet Justin!
Remember the one Noble Sniper had? It's quite simmilar.
It wouldn't be too hard to do-take a mosin, perferably a m39 finn.-it has the better sako barrel.drop in a nice custom stock and put on a siderail so you can mount an svd scope on it.
The svd scope will allready be cammed for 7.62x54. But I ould hate to "alter " a perfectly decent m39 :(
