It is really refreshing (for this ancient old fart) to see pictures of 1911's & 1911A1 type handguns without the usual/common idiot marks and grip screws that are NOT all buggered up. Shows some folks are still particular about their pistolas. Gotta be careful when reinserting that slide lock!
Also, it is nice, when checking out the guns for sale, that we still some at least a few strictly stock firearms for sale - those without all the doodads/extras added that sometimes pushes the value up to a point where we lose interest in obtaining it.
However, we are still free to make those modifications if we want to.........[blaster]

I avoid the idiot marks by putting tape in the typical idiot areas. Did not do that in the Army, but I feel I got assembly down and the tape is just there for a just in case.
Sadly I learned the hard way with my $500 Springfield GI Champion 1911... I have the idiot mark on it... my brother got the idiot mark on his DW CCO 1911, but just sold that in exchange for (hopefully arriving today) a Nighthawk Custom, which he vowed he will not get the mark on. The good news is I learned how to avoid it on a $500 gun, baby bro learned the falls of inexperience with putting a 1911 back together on a $1400 gun... [Faint]

There would be no idiot marks if the idiots would understand and practice the PROPER technique of installing the slide stop on a 1911.
There would be no buggered up screw slots if the same idiots would use the correct screwdriver (NOT Craftsman) and understand that 375 ft/lbs of torque is NOT required to keep the grips on.

Amen, brother Bert.
I didn't even know people put "idiot marks" on there 1911 until I signed up here.
What is an idiot mark on a 1911?

It's the scratch on the frame of a 1911 just below the back of the slide stop/above and behind the trigger area. It happens when people are trying to push the slide stop in and it slides/swings down the face of the frame instead.

Typically most folks don't understand the slide stop presses straight in, they try to rotate it into place whilst pressing it in and, shazam! Idiot scratch!

My 1911 has and idiot scratch on it. Live and learn. I've had it for about 20 years. It's just cosmetic and has had a lot of work on it and a lot of rounds through it.
I was about to say if you don't know what an idiot mark is, either A) you're not an idiot with your 1911 (I'll bet most fit here), or B) you don't own a 1911... [Coffee]

Picky? To me, it is comparable to having a brand spanking new sparkling vehicle and some jackass opens their vehicle door into your door and leaves a nice ding. In the "old old days" it was said that we could kinda judge a persons character by their APPEARANCE (yeah, really). . Bottom line - I guess I don't even want a firearm that shows any serious cosmetic abuse because someone may think that I was the careless abuser.
When you young whipper snappers reach my age, you may see my point.[blaster]
OK, now after all that bull crap, I wonder who will be the first to tell me to turn off the damn computer and take an afternoon nap.[Beer]

There is an idiot mark on my Kimber, but I am not the original owner so I may not be the idiot afterall. There is also the cosmetic issue of holster wear; so where does that leave me? This thing gets some mileage and is not a safe queen...
I filed a narrow notch in the backside of the slide stop on my Springer. Should be a factory issue

What, you mean people ought to be using hollow-ground bits that are the correct thickness and width?
Those are the hallmarks of a professional; not, unfortunately, most D-I-Y'ers.
I put on 1 idiot mark on the first 1911 I owned. now, several several later...not again!

I always thought that was a genius idea.

So much disdain for "The Mark", I've gotten dang good deals on 1911s thanks to those idiots. I don't have any safe queens or collectables, they all get their fair share of use. The ones I've bought new don't have "The Mark".
Is this the too cool for school thread?

Not sure, maybe a subtle way to voice issue with those who post GUN in Excellent Condition EXCEPT for the small scratch on.......................

Glad that I still have and use my old set of Chapman gun screwdrivers.
