Just thinking out loud.
I'm running an Aimpoint with 3x mag.
Would something like this be better all around???
Picking brains!!

I just bought a scope very similar to the VX-R. Check the thread below for the "look" of the VX-R patrol, which you may want to consider as well. Yeah, who cares what it looks like but how it works...

I think the main difference on mine (versus the VX-R you're looking at) are the capless turrets for adjust windage/elevation and the reticle. I have the SPR reticle, whereas the scope you are looking at has several other choices (but not the SPR), that I would consider "hunting" reticles, as they are a bit more limited for ranging capability. The optic quality of both scopes are the same. They are typical Leupold, very clear and bright. The fire dot works really nicely, even in bright sunlight. The 1.25x lower end magnification is generous. It's probably more like 1.5x, but I can still easily keep both eyes open when looking through it. I chose the patrol model simply because I like the SPR reticle better. I like having external adjustments, but the caps are a nice feature depending on how much you toss it around.
I don't have an aimpoint, but I do have a primary arms micro red dot, which is probably not the most representative comparison. For suppressive fire training sessions (or home defense) I'd grab the carbine with the PA red dot just for simplicity. My 1.25-4x is great for shooting at the range though, especially at the longer distances (50 yards to 500 yards), and is going to be my deer hunting scope for next year. But it's also great for shorter distances ~15 yards. I haven't used a magnifier with a red dot so I have no idea how to stack that up against the Leupold.
Check this dude's pics of the SPR in action. The red dot appears much brighter in person than shown in the pictures.

Just talking aloud, not sure how much this helps...
I'd certainly prefer the scope option. Fewer parts to fail and maybe less weight.
Have you looked at this?

5X on top, plus exposed turrets so you can dial for elevation if you want. A buddy has one, and it's very nice for the money.
I ran an H1 for a couple years and tried a 3x magnifier for a day (albeit it was a clone). I didn't like the short eye relief of the magnifier. I have a Burris MTAC now that is similar to the Leupold you linked to and I like it a lot, and personally prefer it over an H1 alone or with magnifier. Very generous eye relief, great reticle for close work, light and seemingly durable. I don't like that it doesn't have an auto shut off on the battery and you can't turn it on and leave it on for two years like tha T1/H1 Aimpoints. I guess everything is a trade off.
