I tumble before depriming, a few good turns in the media separator and gtg. The few i have run in to i drop in a screened bag, a few blast from the air hose as a final fix.

Yep, tumble the fired cases before depriming/sizing.
I tumble after depriming with a universal decapper, and yes, I get lots of cases with walnut chunks stuck in 'em. But after all the cleaning with walnut and polishing with corncob, I then resize them and that pokes the chunks right out. But I'm kind of a wierdo that way, I prep brass to the point of resized and reprimed, rifle cases trimmed to length, then store them in buckets, ready to load. When I want to do some, I just add powder and bullets and crimp 'em shut. Done. Just my way.

I tumble after depriming with a universal decapper,+1 for this
I also use Zilla ground walnut from Petco (cheaper than reloading media) no issues with media in primer or flash holes.
I complicate things. I just use a paperclip to push the little pieces out.
Stop using dry tumblers. I switched to stainless pins a couple years back. Still use the walnuts sometimes. The stainless tumbling makes things look like new, even the primer pockets. I used the paperclip method too.

until i can justify the price and extra steps for wet tumbling, it's walnut media for me.

Don't ever miss one of those SS pins in a case and then load and shoot it. It will scar the hell out of your rifling.

I guess I am old fashioned. I just deprime a cpl hundred cases, trim/chamfer, then throw them in the tumbler and let them go for a bit. When done I sort them by headstamp, which is a convenient time to check and clean the primer pocket as needed. I then full length resize, prime, charge, and seat the bullet. Easy peasy... never even thought about media in the primer pocket.
I've switched to spins, too, but they suck for cleaning chips out after trimming. I use dry media for that.
Compressed air gets the chunks out of the flash holes for me. A quick squirt on each case and they're gone. Also, I can shoot them at my wife if she dares to invade the shop while I'm doing it. Good fun.
For all pistol and most of my rifle ammo I tumble with the spent primers in. I am mainly trying to get the carbon and crud off the outside of the case.
I use decapping pics to get rid of media in the flash holes... They come installed in FL resize dies now days.

I use walnut shells sold as Lizard Bedding from the pet store. The stuff is fine and does not get stuck in the flash holes. I believe the brand is "Zilla".
My brother in Texas recently bought hisself a stainless pin kit with the Thumler's tumbler, and swears it's the best thing since breast implants. I'm gonna send all my dirty brass to him from now on.

Tumbling before depriming will also help keep your dies clean...just saying.

How so? I guess you're talking about depriming with a sizing die? I deprime with a universal decapping die, nothing touches the dirty cases but the decapping pin.
Yup, I give them the bailing wire and compressed air treatment. I am real interested in pins though.

^^^ This, Thumblers Tumbler and steel media rule. I still use vibrate tumbler, but I switched to corn cob media. And Spittoon I told you the crowd would say NOT to de-prime first!! [Coffee] [Neene1] [Poke]
When you guys tumble first and then resize, do you then clean them again to remove the lubricant?

when i bump the shoulder back, every 3rd reload , i put them the tumbler with untreated corn cob media for 15 - 20 minutes. no more lube on the cases.
Dino
I tumble after de-capping.
Once I remove the cases from the media, I place them in a white 45 ACP case holder (50 round), headstamp up.
Over a light, I push out the media (with a small nail), in each of the cases with a "blocked" primer pocket, (usually 1 or 2, but not all 50).
Once done, place tumbled brass in the storage container.
