Hey guys,
My sister has 10 acres in Douglas County, The subdivision is pretty much 10 to 20 acre plots. the Coyotes are eliminating her barn cats and chickens as well as her neighbors animals. Can I legally shoot them? My sister tells me she sees them at all times of day and night and they are not concerned with her or her family at all. If it is legal I figured my ruger 10/22 would be more then enough while not being a big risk of the bullet carrying to far, I saw their tracks not 10 ft off her porch. I figure I will call DC and ask them as well I sure won't goto jail over this so I just wondered if anyone knew.

Yotes are fair game year round you can shoot as many as you wish if you have a small game license.

The problem is if shooting is legal were your sister lives that I can not answer you will have to check into local law regarding that.

I bet that you won't find a shortage of people willing to help you out with that problem. Go ahead and put me on that list. If it is in fact "legal" or not against their covenants then you must ensure that no projectile leaves the property. It only makes sense to do so, but on 10 acres it is ultra important that one considers the backdrop and trajectory of the bullet for every shot. There are also laws such as the distance from a public roadway that you can shoot. It would be good to pull the DOW regulations regarding hunting just to make sure that you're not missing something.

Definitely Call DCSO and if its a go please put me on the list. Douglas county is very chopped up with towns be careful to be sure it truly is DC.

10/22 will be a little light for a coyote. I'd go with a .223 or better

thought about a 223 but figured as close as my sis said the coyotes come to her I could get a good enough shot to take it with a 22, I also didn't want to use anything "High power" due to the proximity of the neighbors. I got a few phone calls into the SO I'll let you know what I find out.

my experience is that a .22lr will barely take out a prarie dog
it'll do the job but they crawl back into their hole gut shot to die a slow death - not cool
scope your AR then get your self some shooting sticks or a bipod
the .223 is a hyper accurate round
and will do the job right

I know man, you can use some soft point or hollow point ammo and maybe shoot from an elevated position to reduce your ricochette potential too

Don't miss and you will be fine![Beer]

What did you find out about the legality of it?

You might also go talk with the neighbors and ask if they are having problems with them as well...don't say you are shooting them unless they bring up something that would lead you to believe they are okay with it. You don't need more people watching your back when you take these out.

My two cents: call them in and use a shotgun. Alleviates the fear of hitting someone's house.

Sorry so long for the update but SO said it wouldn't be a good idea and refered me to DOW which said absolutley not but they were already on the issue due to many resident complaints. The ironic part of this is a couple weeks ago my sisters St Bernard was guarding a wounded yearling deer and she asked me what she should do so I told her to call DOW and they sent a ranger over and he politely shot it 3 times.

all I want to do is shoot coyotes once,

freaking commies

wow, sounds like the DOW wants to run things but do nothing about the problems. If they have been receiving a lot of complaints about the coyotes, you would think something would have been done.

What did they do with the deer? haul it off? hopefully they put the meat to use.

if you can shoot call them in and shoot them with a shotgun. no overtravel then. just call them in pretty close and use 00buck. or if you dont have alot of dogs running around, you could set some traps

I have a Rem.700 w/ a Gemtech TPRS can and some EBR 180 gr. subsonic (about .38 ballistics at 100 yards). Stupid quiet.
