Thinking of caving in and buying one to shoot matches, anyone here have an opinion as to which manufacturer as there are some distinct differences between them.

Which ever one you can find, at a reasonable price. I'm partial to the AR NM, myself.

Am I to take that as 6 of one a half dozen of the other in your eyes or is that statement based on the current shenanigans? Why are you partial to the Armalite. The rear sight being 1/4 : 1/4 vs the Rock river being 1/2 on the elevation? The front sling mounting point is different between them as well. I would have to presume the barrels are on par with each other and I know the Armalite is a Wylde chamber but I do not recall what the RR chamber is. I know where an A4 national match Armalite is locally but would prefer an A2 I could always buy an A2 National Match upper.

Yes to all the above. I've owned the NM from AR before and overall, there was not anything to dislike about them. If you are getting one for those long distance / precision shots go AR.
