View Full Version : Home Networking trouble
So I got my desktop computer up and running again after my HD died a couple weeks ago...its all fine and dandy except that im having all sorts of trouble hooking up to my home network and the internet as a result...
Its Vista 64 bit, if anybody has a clue, please let me in on it...
Standard Ethernet or Wireless?
I also have 64-bit Vista, but I'm having some application compatibility problems.
one word... vista! jk... i've never tried vista but i hear all these problems.
Need more info. What exactly is the problem?

Buy a Mac!!! LOL
if you was closer I would fix it for you. But as Sucka said what exactly is your issue.
mainly is it only this computer that cant get on? Have you looked at your router settings?
It is a wired network...I had it running fine under 32bit Vista but changed over when I got my PC running again yesterday...Vista says its recieving local and internet, but I cannot ping the router or anything beyond it...
The firewall is probably blocking any ICMP traffic, including PING. For starters, try disabling the firewall to verify. If it works, you can re-enable the firewall and then go to the advanced tab to modify the ICMP setting to allow an incoming echo request.
also some routers have been known to not accept 64 bit vista or vise versa....
I run vista 64 bit with a dlink router and dlink modem and it works like a charm.
Now for Tech Support 101 .. and I am only half serious... Is it plugged in? Do you see a link light on the network card? Could be a lose cable or bad cable... just a good place to start
Delphi .. throw a link to that information.. where Vista at any level won't connect because of an a specific or non-specific router/switch related issue. Not buyin' it... not even with Vista, well not unless some dimwit tried to configure IPv6 for their IPv4 network...
First are you getting an IP? More in particular as asked, is your router handing out DHCP or did you need to set a static IP. Vista won't block low level ICMP to the gateway device.. e.g. Ping.
What IP are you getting? Is it the right range for your little network?
I would however in the strongest of possible terms recommend turning the security levels down as far as you can, if not out right disabling them until you have initial connectivity.
If you can get us a copy and paste of the results of an IPCONFIG /ALL run from the command prompt. Or at least send it to me in an IM, I'll check a couple of times today for it.
The NIC is built into the mobo, and when I plug in the ethernet cable, it lights up steady orange, doesnt flash. I plugged the cable into my laptop and got a good signal from it.
Ive disabled IPv6 in Vista, and manually changed the settings that were on there to the settings my laptop shows...Vista says it finds multiple networks, but wont show me any to connect to. It says Im in the network, and have internet, yet I cannot ping my router or get to anything beyond it. Ive tried signing in as admin to the router from this PC, no luck. Can do it from the laptop, though.
I did disable the firewall, no luck there either...
Let me get an ipconfig up here...
more 'undocumented' features from M$ ? [Bang]

UPDATE!
Used a registry edit I found on the MS website and now my pings are reaching the router, though they are high...
First was 775ms
Second is 1771ms
Third was 1996ms
Fourth was 35964ms...quite possibly a record high ping for a local network...
ummm.. got the latest drivers for that pos os?
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/932134
link dropped
the link also has a link to a nifty tool that may help you out
Router is a Linksys WRT54GL with that useless quick setup button...got it last may, so in theory it would be compatible with Vista....hell, I used to have Vista 32bit on this machine and had internet, just since I installed 64bit that Ive had this problem...
Those ping times could be erroneous due to timer drift. Does your system have a multi-core processor?
Did the registry change relate to disabling the IPv4 Checksum Offload? Most of the folks having problems with Marvell NICs and 64-bit Vista say that this driver fixes the problems;

Your router should be fine. Just make sure your firmware is up-to-date. I have the WRT54Gv5. If I had the Linux version like you I'd probably be running DD-WRT or Tomato firmware. I'm currently running the DD-WRT v24 6.2 Micro release candidate on my router. I get better QOS and throughput along with some features that Cisco didn't include.
Hell, I've installed Vista multiple times on the same system and had it do different things on each install. Don't even get me started on multiple platforms and having different responses. It's far from consistent. Sometimes you add a wireless connection and it works for a while, only to mysteriously stop working.
On one of my Vista Enterprise 32-bit notebooks I had it set to do a boot-time defrag using Diskeeper 2008. I set it to perform a chkdsk before the defrag. The chkdsk found some "free" space that was identified as being used that it was nice enough to free up for me. Problem was, the space ended up belonging to the MFT. I never could recover from that. Had to reformat the disk. That's the first time in 15 years I've had the MFT flake out like that.
So I downloaded that driver and tried to get Vista to install it, but it says the best driver is already installed, even though the installed version is 9.xxx while the new one is 10.xxx
So fuckin stubborn...I uninstalled the driver and Windows immediately reinstalled it...
XP x64 was frustrating enough. I tried to make myself use Vista Ultimate 64-bit, but I got tired of working around the limitations. Even SP1 RC didn't make everything wonderful. You are a brave soul to rely on Vista 64-bit.
I'm using 32-bit at work almost exclusively. When I want to get something done at home, it's usually being done on XP. We probably won't adopt Vista on a wide scale at work. We may just have to hold out for Windows 7 (eta 2010).
I liked XPx64... just couldn't get the drivers to support everything.. or some of the 'freeware' that you really need (like some adobe stuff)
Yeah Im getting pretty disgusted at Vista 64 so far...if I cant get this figured out by next weekend at the longest, then I'll probably just uninstall and reinstall 32bit...maybe try to sell this copy, as I havent activated it yet...
I use a news reader application that is 32-bit. It locks up 64-bit Vista so bad that the system won't shutdown. I have to either hit the reset button or power it down. An application should not have the ability to make the OS lose its mind like that.
Yet, I've been wanting to fully utilize my 4GB RAM and am contemplating upgrading to 8GB.[Kick1]
Yeah the primary reason I got it is to make full use of the 4gigs in my build...
Hey Marlin, What are these GEEKS talking about???? [ROFL1] Just kidding fellas, I'd rather call a tech to come in and get it where I want it. I don't have enough brain cells to risk all that damage with trouble shooting. Good luck I hope you have success. [Coffee]
No clue. Personally I would put 480v to it and called it good.[ROFL1]

"good"???
how about "toast"
better yet...."burnt toast"!! lol
That was the Idea. [Beer]
I dont know what to do now...Ive updated the driver firmware and no luck yet...I might try a 3rd party NIC...
Saw that from some folks with the Marvell Yukons. Trouble was finding something that was supported. My ASUS mobo has a Realtek GigE NIC and it works fine with 64-bit.
Yeah tomorrow Im gonna go buy a wired NIC and see if I can get through with that...god I hope I can...
It is a wired network...I had it running fine under 32bit Vista but changed over when I got my PC running again yesterday...Vista says its recieving local and internet, but I cannot ping the router or anything beyond it...
dunno if anyone answer yet -- disable the firewall, you'll get your ping. ipconfig output would be helpful too. feel free to send me an email or PM for phone number, i'll help you troubleshoot over the phone, if you still need help.
Firewall has been disabled...my ipconfig /all reading is on a previous page in this thread.
I bought a wired linksys card, but Vista didnt recognize it or the drivers on the CD...gonna give wireless a try..if that dont work, Im giving up...
Linksys doesn't have any PCI NICs that are compatible with Vista.
I noticed...good thing in a way...all my PCI slots are full :P
I picked up a belkin USB wireless card and downloaded the Vista 64 drivers...it installed, but it cant see any networks, it seems[M2]
Used the Belkin software to perform a ping test...here are the results:

...and you tried disabling the firewall with the wireless config?
Ive had Windows Firewall disabled since I got Vista up and running...
What's the firmware version on your WRT54GL? Do you have UPnP enabled on your router?
Have you tried this router compatibility tool?
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/932134
I tried this test on my router. My router is missing some of the advanced functions of Vista. It's no big deal to me. There was a link to Vista Certified Routers and neither of ours are on the list;
http://winqual.microsoft.com/HCL/ProductList.aspx?m=v&g=d&cid=712&f=86b
As a matter of fact, there aren't any "certified" for x64 and only one that is listed as "compatible". ETA: I clicked on the link to the "compatible" device and there is absolutely no indication that it will work with x64.
...did I mention that there was some word today that the Windows 7 release is being moved up to the 2nd half of 2009? Vista is really making in-roads.
[Faint]
I bought an Abit Wireless PCI-e adapter and installed it and am now posting from my desktop! :)
Thanks for all the help, guys...

Pardon me while I post from my natively compiled x86_64 Gentoo install with no problems....
Smack talk aside, this thread serves to make me very glad I got a laptop with XP instead of Vista.
Just and FYI guys...
"Windows Vista successor scheduled for a H2 2009 release?
Chicago (IL) - Several industry sources have confirmed to TG Daily that a very early version of Windows 7, previously code-named Blackcomb Vienna, already has been shipped to “key partners” as a “Milestone 1” (M1) code drop for validation purposes. A roadmap received by TG Daily indicates that the new operating system will be introduced in the second half of 2009.
So Vista, AKA Windows XP ME .. aka Mista (change to make a better OS) is already on the way out. I can tell you that many federal agencies and mid sized businesses are going to skip Vista all together.
That's the direction we were leaning before they moved Windows 7 forward. I was willing to wait until 2010 to skip Vista.
win 7 was my request
I told them that vista was a pos and I'd never buy it..
I guess I should start looking for some checks in the mail from M$
