View Full Version : My phone just went crazy!
Did this happen to anyone else? My phone started beeping (like the emergency broadcast system beep) and a little /!\ icon popped up about an Amber Alert: 2000 Green Honda Civic.... I didn't know they could do that!?

My just did that too. First time ever.
Do you have smartphones? Wondering if it's some kind of app?

It is part of SMS messaging, I think, tied in with the smartphone. You can opt out.

Yes mine did as well, and it did last night at 3AM! You can turn the notifications off under the settings, Cell Broadcasts.

Are you registered with any emergency services? I've registered my cell phone with my county since I'd like to know if there are wildfires and other interesting things.

First time it ever did that before. But my whole office went bezerk because everyone's phone went off with that crazy alarm. I love how they describe the car, but not the child that's missing. Real effective.

Yep, mine went nuts. Never seen that before. I couldnt turn it off!
Mine did that yesterday for the first time.. I know I had read something about carriers starting to do that till the national system is set up.. but.. damn.. I thought for sure we'd been nuked w/ the air raid siren going off on my phone.
I have ATT and didn't get, but I was will glock21 and he got it on his. Not sure what service provider he has. They have that little girl recovered though.

mine did it for the second time today. The first was at 2am announcing a blizzard warning and woke the wife and I up. I was fucking pissed!
I think that's pretty cool. Nobody ever calls or texts me anyways so getting emergency alerts would be kind of neat. Mine didn't go off for the Amber alert.
Yeah first time I've ever seen that kind of cool, especially since I rarely listen to the radio.

I think its great they alert for missing person or emergency. I dont mind, Iwould like to see more.
My smart phone I can turn that on and off under settings
Mine did it, I don't have a smart phone, I'm not amused.
If I want to know about an amber alert, I'll check the news. When I'm busy, indoors, working on a project, I'm quite likely not going to see a car that abducted someone - LEAVE ME ALONE!
Did you sign up for jeffco alerts. Probably where it came from

Yep same happened here.

Not sure who the question was aimed at, but I don't sign up for ANY alerts, just not my style.

The FCC took a number of steps in facilitating the ability of consumers to receive emergency alerts through their wireless phones. In 2008, the Commission issued a series of orders adopting requirements for a Commercial Mobile Alert System (CMAS), a system by which commercial mobile service (CMS) providers may transmit emergency alerts to their subscribers, if they choose to do so.
If I remember right, you can opt out of everything but "presidential" alerts.
Galaxy S3 under messaging then menu then settings you will get an option to turn it on and off

Yup! My second notice. 1st was a severe weather conditions warning for my area yesterday, and the 2nd the amber alert notice tonight. Kind of cool I think. I kept the app.
PS I have Verizon Wireless.
My personal phone (verizon) went off at work in the middle of the boss training me, got the "wtf, really?!" look. then all the company phones (sprint) went off about 2 minutes later... couldn't resist giving him a smart-ass smirk.
I also got some for flash flood warnings a few months back.
I got the AA. During set-up on my Droid, there was a screen that let me choose to opt in or out and I opted in.

My Sprint phone got it as well.

Ha. I probably wouldn't be in a coverage area anyways. That must be why I didn't get the Amber alert today. I was out south of Byers all day. I'm guessing everyone that got the alert was in the metro area.

I worked from home today so that's where I was when I got it.
It was odd. Phone just started vibrating violently. Thought something was wrong with it as the notification didn't pop up over my weather lock screen like an incoming call does.
I got tired of the continuous blizzard alerts after the snow had already stopped. Yesterday it was cool. Today I was already over it. Alert me if there is a fist fight in the parking lot and I'll be happy.
