"Criminal Protection" Bill Introduced in Colorado!

Friday, January 18, 2008

State Senator Sue Windels (D-19) has introduced Senate Bill 49, which requires mandatory storage of all firearms. This legislation would force adults to put all their firearms under lock and key or face an undetermined misdemeanor if that firearm is later used in a suicide or crime. This dangerous bill renders homeowners defenseless and gives criminals a clear advantage in home invasions. If passed, SB49 would add to the already cumbersome bureaucracy that gun shops, gun shows, or anywhere else firearms are sold, by requiring them to post a sign informing gun-owners that they must lock up their guns.

No hearing date has been scheduled in the Senate Committee on State, Veterans & Military Affairs Committee.

Please contact the members of the Committee today and respectfully urge them to oppose SB49.

Thanks for the heads-up, just (respectfully) wrote to all of 'em.

FYI, the description above leaves a bit out... it's specifically about crimes or suicides by minors, but there are definitely a few holes in it. You can view the text of the actual bill here:
http://www.leg.state.co.us/Clics/CLICS2008A/csl.nsf/BillFoldersSenate?openFrameset
...it's the second one from the bottom.

If that link doesn't work go to http://www.leg.state.co.us/ and click on the Bills link under "Senate - Current Regular Session".

I mentioned how the exceptions on pages 4-5 fail to address implications to CCW permit holders, for one example. The bigger concern to me is that Windels thinks locking up our guns will prevent teenage deaths/suicides... if someone really wants to kill themselves, lack of a firearm isn't going to stop them. You also can't legislate stupidity away...

It got passed out of committee. Now the Senate Appropriations committee is kicking it around.

I got some friends to do a mini-firemission, but the vote was 3-2 along party lines.

I've sent dead tree mail to my senator. However, it's Veiga, who is wrong about basically everything, so I'm not too optimistic.
