Message from my Payroll organization "quietly" shared this morning...

Thursday, December 20, 2012

The federal government implemented the Tax Relief, Unemployment Insurance Reauthorization, and Jobs Creation Act of 2010 which included a provision that reduced employee’s social security tax rate by 2 percent, from 6.2 percent to 4.2 percent in 2011. This provision was then extended through the end of 2012.

Because of limited political support, it is considered unlikely that this provision will be extended into 2013 and therefore, with the expiration of this provision, the Social Security rate can be projected to return to 6.2 percent. Our payroll system has been updated to begin withholding at the 6.2 percent rate effective January 1, 2013. In the unlikely event this provision is extended, we will quickly adjust our payroll systems accordingly.

so, what's the problem? You don't think people should pay for their benefits? Or only others should pay?

being of the older generation, back when I was in high school (the president had the same initials for both first and last names) they took a nationwide poll and more people of my age group believed in UFO's than that they would get social security.

I don't believe in UFO's either.

BUT
if that's the program (and it is just a tax, it's not a pension), then everyone gets to pay. Or hell we could just print money (oh, never mind)

Go blame the boomers and older than that for sucking everything up and not giving up a dime.

so, what's the problem?

I'm opposed to any mandated increase in withholdings on a per tax payer basis to fund a failing system backed by an ever-failing US Govt fiscal policy. Further, noting the dynamic & behavior of the voting bloc in this country over past ~8 years, I'm not interested in "contributing more" to the status quo via this same system. In simple terms, let me leverage the financial opportunity, not them. Do I want 4% or 6% of my revenue in their hands? I’ll take the lesser.

You don't think people should pay for their benefits?

Never stated that but since you asked; I "think a lot" about what people should "pay for" via their required participation in the current system of taxation, particularly under this current regime. What "benefits" are you inquiring about specifically and maybe I'll give you a better response?

Or only others should pay?

Huh? This thread was intended to be Friday humor, a personal example of the impending "fiscal cliff" & Washington's dysfunction impacting one person, me. But I'll play, ask a better question.

If you believe it will never pay out or that it will fail and you elect leaders that actively work to weaken or destroy something, don't bitch when it comes true. Because you all are complaining that something will not work when you are actively working to destroy it.

Self fulfilling prophesy...

Since you are apparently wise in the ways of these things, tell me how you would make SS "strong" or sustainable over the long term, at the current level of taxation

Raise the minimum retirement age to 107, and reduce disability benefits by 95%.
