Looks like I need to re prioritize so I can get one of these. I don't have any guns in 308 so this would be my first. I like the idea of the PTR91 as I could hunt with it.

thoughts?

Just got an email from CDNNINVESTMENTS. They are selling them for something like $1300.

Not as good as a real HK91 but not bad either.

Figured that was why you were asking. I was surprised to receive it after they posted their delay message on their website. If I was looking for one I would most likely go for it. I seem to remember they were selling them for just under $1000 before the panic, so they didn't raise the price too much.

IME they are nice quality HK clones (unlike POS Century guns). On the other hand they are extremely nose heavy and ungainly. A .308 AR platform is a much better choice, and a Scar 17 blows both out of the water. But better is meaningless if you cant put your mitts on one.

Also a huge price difference between the Scar 17 and the PTR91.

hence the last sentence in my post.

well, now isn't really the time to get one to be honest! Unless you want to prioritize it over say a decent used vehicle. If you can get one cheap buy it right away. If not, plan on spending a lot. I would get the Scar if I were you. they are very nice!

My bad. I thought your last sentence referred to availability, not price.

Not as good as a real HK91 but not bad either.

This simply isn't true. Form and function is every bit as good (with the exception of the 'Navy' grips imo) and the barrels JLD is putting on everything but the GI models is far better.

I'm a fan-boy of the PTR-91, but I have shot both a lot.

I like the idea of how cheap the magazines are too. How does it shoot?

I've had the CAI version and a the PTR "Perimeter" rifle and have a SCAR 17 now. The PTR is an outstanding .308 battle rifle. Never had an issue, great quality, accurate. Fantastic all-the-way around. Way better in quality than the CAI. As much as I love my SCAR, the PTR with its longer barrel was much more accurate at 300 meters. MOA on the SCAR was much larger. Still good hits on the target but not as a good as the PTR.

The PTR ate ALL ammo I put in it. TULA, Surplus DMG, brass, etc... Great rifle

If I give the PTR one negative is it "dings" the brass hard, right in the middle. You can't reload the brass. You can buy a "deflector" that does a good job of saving the brass, BUT it doesn't fit on the Perimeter version of the PTR...

Can't say enough good things though about the PTR...

Pick one up. IMO they are built better than the HK and every bit as good. The earlier ones with more HK parts are the primo ones to grab but I would say get what you can. Shitcan the crappy aluminum forend and find a HK or FMP standard wide one and you take a good chunk of weight off of the nose.
Reliable as hell and will eat anything.
For a 308 battle rifle you can't go wrong.

I have the F model , the side folder and MSG perimeter rifle. Awesome rifles. When I was in the military I got to get the Schützenschnur on the G3 rifles. Personally I feel the PTR rifles shoot just as good. I don't see any reason to pay 3500 for an HK unless your collecting. The GI rifle is more of a accurate copy of the G3.

Any and all semi-automatic military style firearms are going to be hard to find right now. That said, are you dead set against a FAL? A better battle rifle IMHO at about the same price.

Hunting in a semi where accuracy is paramount would = m1a

PTR91 would be nice, if only because 20rd mags are $3 at midway and in-stock.

As I said earlier, if I wanted one I would pull the trigger now before prices go ape shit on these also.

I had (until the boating accident) many real HK91's and several PTRs (both early and late model). The real HK's felt and shot better than the PTR's every time.

i ordered a ptr91 receiver last tuesday to build one of my parts kits (have a cetme and a g3) i just hope it gets here before any crazy legislation. by the way whoever said while hunting where accuracy is paramount = m1a..... i took my deer this year with my 8x57 m76, i would do it again in a heart beat, m1a's arent magic. you put the same money and work into most semi auto rifles and they're capable of the same accuracy. i know a guy on gunco.net that builds .308x39 ak's that literally shoot dime sized groups...... my point is that a ptr91 would probably work great for hunting
