Have stoped by the FS range on Rampart Range road a couple times to test / function fire a new barrel this week. Someone has done an OUTSTANDING job of cleaning the place up.
I didn't see any posts or other heads up concerning a cleanup ; did I miss something?
All concerned deserve a major pat on the back!

last weekend they closed the range down for a cleaning. Glad to hear they did a good job.

Was it cleaned up by some volunteer group that we should have known about?

I've been avoiding that place for years, for the obvious reasons.

My understanding, as mean as it is, is that the county uses inmates to do the cleaning. I do not know who did the cleaning up there, but if the weather is good this weekend i might try to get up there and exercise the 300WM.

Where is this Range?

Rampart Range is just off of Rampart Range Road, the dirt road that runs out of Garden of the Gods (if you come in from the manitou springs end and through the parking lot at balancing rock, it'll be on your left). Good 45-minute drive up into the mountains, but a great view of Pike's.

NAD, best avoided on weekends , much less crowded and more serious shooters on week days. I think I once measured it at just over 7 miles from the turn near balencing rock. Road is quite rough in places.

If you get there early (and by early I mean pre-10 AM) you can usually find a bench and find the good shooters. The idiots tend to show up later in the day, can't be bothered to get up there that early.

I'm coming south on 67 from Deckers into Woodland Park. What's the best way to get to Rampart Range?

I'm told you can hit the back end of Rampart Range Road, however if you're going for Rampart, you may as well just come into Manitou Springs then go up through GOTG. Easier drive for most of it.

How's the road? Last time I was up there the road was bad enough to eat my car.

still fairly gnarly. Some of us are going up tomorrow morning (sunday morning). Figure to leave about 9 AM to convoy up. Since I have the pickup truck, I am designated rock crawler. Guess i should get them to pitch in for bigger tires and a lift...*G*

You are time ahead if you come down the pass and go back up to the range from G of the G. Yes, you can get on RRR from WP, but it is a pretty long haul down to the range.

To get to RRR from WP, find the high school and take the road it is on up. Feels north as you drive along. When you get to the Y, take a right.

You can even get on it up near Deckers. Go up to the Sprucewood, go a short ways further, and take a right on RRR.

Check your Gazeteer - it's clearly marked on the map.

Who cleaned up the range? I was up there this weekend and saw the direct opposite of what this thread describes. An effort is being put together as we speak to go up and clean that area by a bunch of guys from the colorado4x4.org website. If you are interested in keeping places like this clean and useable you should join our combined effort. I will post the details A.S.A.P.

Why don't you just go to the "South Shoot" range there on 67? You won't have to deal with the trash and crackheads. That's where me and the grandkid go shooting, we drive down there from Parker. It's just a little north of the Rainbow Falls Campground, on the west side of the road. Driveway's kinda rough.
