Looking for an inexpensive HD shotgun. Recommendations? I see some inexpensive ones at big-5...Remington and Mossberg...

Can't go wrong with either one. I own three Remingtons, and I have shot Mossy's a number of times, other than the placement of the safety, There's not that much of a differance in quality IMO.

+2

I’ve owned the Mossberg 500 and 590. Both were good guns no problems at all.
You may all so want to look at the Winchester 1300. This is the one I use for the home now. I don’t know what there are going for now, but I don’t remember it being much more then the Mossberg.

Just a heads-up... I've often heard the Win. 1300 as a viable option to the other two also, but it's been discontinued for a few years now. Still plenty out there used of course.

Opintions regarding length/mag capacity? 20" 9rd vs. 18.5" 8rd...

If you can't stop the threat with 8 rounds, what makes you think 9 is going to do any good? [Weight]

18.5 barrel, the magazine that fits correctly (not sticking out 4inches further) and practice, practice practice.

Thanks for the info I didn't know.

Any opinions on auto loader vs. pump?

semi-auto's are "faster", and "easier", but there's more $hit to go wrong.

Pumps have a more complex manual of arms and require more practice. (but with practice can be insanely fast), and have less stuff to go wrong. Like a revolver, you just keep pumping if it doesn't go off.

Anyone handled a Mossberg 930 SPX?

For HD id say go with a pump. alot of times, just chambering a round is enough to freak someone out into scurrying away.... that is of course you WANT them to leave.... if not, then just have one in the hole ;)

I have a mossberg500A that i bought off gunbroker.com for $180 NIB several years ago. shipped for $20 and had the yellow form done for free at a pawn shop here in texas.... $200 aint bad for a brand new shotgun..... keep in mind this was the model with the heat shield, pistol grip, etc

, what about short stroking a pump? is it possible?

yes
it's a problem, esp with shorter arms and it's possible to do. (but easy to fix, easier than a FTF in a semi-auto)
training makes it go away.
