I "preordered" the 16.5 flattop in black from Copes. Apparently at this stage you don't give your CC info but instead chose check/MO and then one of the copes people will contact you to get your FFL dealer info and CC info. They want the Cc info on file but say they won't charge it until the weapon ships. From the giant 115 page thread on arfcom ( http://www.ar15.com/forums/t_6_43/280158_Charles_Daly_working_with_IMI_to_produce_a_ US_TAVOR___PICS_INSIDE___Confirmed_By_C_D_Mr_K_ins ide_.html&page=108 my apologies if linking is a no no), CDaly is hoping to ship to distributors by end of March.

I think as of a few days ago, someone in that thread was #80 in line for the black 16.5 flattop. I only preordered this morning and have not been contacted by anyone which is not surprising. Also, I'm all about OD Green but not too fond of FDE either. And I'm hoping like crazy that some stupid new AWB doesn't torpedo CDaly's ass right out of the water.

What "built-in optic" do you mean? They all come with the flip up backup iron sights, just the long rail versions have them underneath (so I guess they're inaccessible as long as you have the rail on? At least they're included if you change your mind about the huge rail!). The "IDF" version comes with a Meprolight reflex sight that is attached to a flush fit short rail, and that's how you can see the front flip up sight unobstructed. The IDF version is preselling for the $2,390 or whatever. Errr they were, I just looked on the website and there are no Tavors anymore. Hopefully I got in on time... Nobody has contacted me yet : (

From the arfcom thread, someone posted yesterday that he talked with the lady at Copes and she says that the preorders for black 16" flat-tops are set to ship early March (this definitely sounds plausible, as from some of the videos at Shot Show 2013 with the IMI guy, he said that they were "in production"). I am pumped!!

I got to handle these at SHOT this year and was very impressed. The flatt top version has flip up sights built into the rail, not under it and when people say the IDF has a "built in" optic it's because the mepro site it attached to the barrel while the other versions attach to the rail. Basically the flat top versions are easier to customize and the IDF is closer to what the Israelis are issued.

Good thing you pre-ordered, the demand is getting crazy already. The version you ordered (black 16.5 flat tops) will be the first ones released from what I was told, followed by the other versions very soon after. When I got to handle them the balance was great, controls were well thought out, and I was surprised how small they are (shorter than my 11.5 inch SBR AR15). You're going to love it. Can't wait to get mine as well!

Great review. Thanks for posting. Now I really want one. Seems like a great, ergonomic design. The only thing I don't like is the built-in BUIS; they seem a little gimmicky. Since it has a full rail though, that's easily remedied if they don't work out. Really awesome that it'll reliably use the wide variety of grandfathered high-capacity baby-killing assault clips I own.

Spyder, what is that second one you posted?

Not at all. The barrel and bolt moves back toward your shoulder, inside the body of the weapon. Great CQB design.

Like Tuefulhund said they eliminate most of the buttstock by moving the receiver back to your shoulder.
The Norinco MAK90 is 8 3/4 inches shorter with K-VAR bullpup stock installed.
A Saiga 7.62x39 is 10 inches shorter with a Kushnapup bullpup stock installed.
A Saiga 12 is 9 1/4 inches shorter with a Kushnapup stock installed.
A Mossberg 500 Bullpup is 11 inches shorter than the Mossberg 500 it is based on.
My Ruger 10/22 is 7 1/2 inches shorter than the carbine I started with.

Never understood the appeal of bullpups... it's moving the grip forward, not reducing the OAL.

The Tavor (24") with a 16" barrel is shorter than the M4 (33" with stock extended for shooting) with a 14.5" barrel.
The point of a bullpup is not to shorten the overall length either... it is to move the weight back closer to your shoulder. When you are not supporting as much moving mass away from your body it is easier to keep it steady and therefore more accurate. Secondly, by keeping the weapon closer to your body and having a smaller overall length you can traverse obstacles and maneuver in tight quarters easier.

Another example is the Kel-Tec RFB (26" with a 18" Barrel) compared with a FN FAL(30" w/ a 17.2" Barrel) or a PTR-91 (40.4" with a 17.7" barrel)

In these examples a bullpup design makes perfect sense. The biggest flaw with most of the bullpup conversion designs is the triggers... or the trigger transfer systems because the trigger/hammer mechanism is so far removed from the actually trigger and they get a lot of creep and movement.

Ok, guess I stand corrected. :-) So how does this translate into long distance shooting with a bullpup? I still would think they'd primarily only be good for close-quarters stuff (doesn't it shorten the sight radius?), but I've never owned one. How does a bullpup hold up at lengthier yardage for accuracy as compared to a conventional stock design?

UncleDave
03-19-2013, 10:39
That is the advantage to the bullpup design. You get the advantages of both the full length 18-20" barrel, and the menuveriblity of the shorter overall length. It's a carbine with the accuracy of a rifle. My only issues with them are the afore mentioned trigger problems, and if you shoot lefty the brass ejects a little close to my nose.

Rest assured, I won't. It still looks like the Tavor is built more solidly than the FS2000. I just had to replace my charging handle with the "Judo-Chop" because the plastic one from FNH busted with normal use.

@ Dingo, I know already answered, but again actually good for long range purposes aside from trigger issue. Like in the .308 RFB for example, if they ever came out with it, you could have a 24 inch barrel for full advantage of the .308 but have it in a rifle that's a similiar size to a 18 inch AR10.
Try seeing a KSG in person, the high capacity comes from the tube setup, but it does impress upon you how you can have an incredibly tiny package while still having an 18inch barrel. Or another example. My friend got a SBR LWRC. Like 10 or 11 inch barrel. IIRC, it will be like half inch longer than the tavor with 16.5.

Understand that I should probably have glasses.

That being said we shoot golfballs at 100 yards with my AUGs. They have a 1.5 power sight (standard sight) on them. Personally I can't even see the golfball but as I know where I placed it I know where to shoot to hit it.

What I am looking for is what type of mags the Tavor will use for the 9mm kit...?

"9mm conversion kits using "Colt Style" 9mm magazines or "modified UZI mags" will be available."

http://www.czfirearms.us/index.php?topic=51573.0

If those guys are right. The pictures I have seen sure look like they are based on the Uzi mag.

Uzi mags are readily available now. They are easy to convert except for the last round bolt hold open.

Oh, and I saw a posting over on ar15.com that the poster said he was going to start working on a 22rf conversion kit. I lost the link to it.

Figured I'd revive this slightly cold thread because I actually fondled a Tavor rifle today. Picked up a new toy from a guy this afternoon and not only did he have the Tavor, he had a Kel-Tec RFB sitting right next to it. The Tavor felt really solid and well balanced. I didn't try the trigger so I have no idea on that. I got the feeling that it would be a fantastic rifle to shoot. Same for the RFB. It felt a lot more solid than I thought it would. Both were quality guns that I'll lust after for some time.
