Sorry if this is a repost. Further proof that being a law abiding gun owner is in itself a crime.

that tells the bad guys where the unprotected homes are. I would thing the people without a permit would be more upset.

I don't see what the point of posting the information that someone is gun owner online. What is it really gonna do? Ya you're gonna see who has a gun but so what. I do feel that its an invasion of privacy.

i think it says" hi, there is a good chance i own firearms. i have a job, so my firearms are left in my home when i am not home, you are welcome to come steal them"

If I were a bad guy and I knew a person had a ccw, I wouldn't break into that house or mess with them.

people go to work, shopping, church, etc. a criminal can watch someones house and know when they arent home. and then break in.

it also lets everyone that is antigun in the area to know who to hate.

I'm guessing the names and addresses of the newspaper reporter and other staff will soon be online. If I knew how to get the info, I'd do it: "ATTN: Mr John Smith lives here. He does not own a gun. He can't adequately protect himself, wife or children against an armed intruder. Knock yourself out."

How about publishing the names and addresses of everyone in the area that is a registered Democrat, makes over 250K a year, and does NOT have a handgun permit...it'd be like a shopping list for criminals

When I looked there were almost 1000 comments. I didn't read them all but I read many. I didn't see any that approved of publishing that information. I'm sure there were some...but I didn't see one.

Oh it doesn't show EVERYONE's info.

A reporter/editor and gun owner of that newspaper had his info redacted.

I could care less.

My wife stays at home and I work from home often. If a bad guy thinks my place is a good place to target he's barking up the wrong tree, not only do we do own guns but we know how to use them and would not hesitate to unload a few rounds of 12G into an intruder.

I would think if any malfeasance occurs to one of these parties whom was published and they can prove it was due to the paper having published that info, they could have a liability issue.

Back when the Zimmerman incident was fresh, I heard a rumor that spike lee twittered zimmerman's address so basically the angry mob knew where to go. Unfortunately, he gave the address of the house across the street.

I thought the comment on one of the stories about the newspaper being liable for women with abusive exes who now have to relocated due to being outed was a good one - not to mention the fact that having a firearm for personal protection may have been an ace in the hole for some of those women, and now instead of a secret, it's a known fact. So if the ex decides to come calling, he'll bring more than a bat.

Oh, wait - perhaps they can just post "gun free zone" signs?

SENATOR BALL ISSUES STATEMENT ON JOURNAL NEWS GUN PERMIT MAP AND INTRODUCES LEGISLATION TO PREVENT FUTURE ACTS OF IDIOCY

Brewster, N.Y. – 12/26/2012 –
Today Senator Greg Ball (Patterson – R, C, I) called for the Journal News Newspaper, a Gannett Company, to immediately remove a map they have posted on their website (http://www.lohud.com/interactive/article/20121223/NEWS01/121221011/Map-Where-gun-permits-your-neighborhood-) that unethically reveals homeowners with pistol permits in Westchester, Rockland and Putnam Counties. The Journal News says that the information contained in the map was obtained by submitting Freedom of Information requests for the names and addresses of pistol permit holders by county. Senator Ball has now announced that he will introduce legislation in the New York State Senate, to prevent this from happening again.

“The asinine editors at the Journal News, have once again gone out of their way to place a virtual scarlet letter on law abiding firearm owners throughout the region. The immediate elimination of the information posted on the Journal News Website is the only way we can ensure the safety and liberty of these New Yorkers. This is clearly a violation of privacy, and needs to be corrected immediately. The same elitist egg heads who use their editorial page to coddle terrorists and criminals are now treating law abiding citizens like level three sexual predators. Am I surprised? No. Should every person with commonsense be offended? Yes. Furthermore, the Journal News has placed the lives of these folks at risk by creating a virtual shopping list for criminals and nut jobs,” said Ball. “Publishing this information on a website provides criminals with a map of where they can steal firearms from lawful owners for later use in the commission of crimes. Preventing the theft of guns and their criminal misuse is an important public-policy goal. This map is bad for the good guys and good for the bad guys.”

In the Assembly Ball multi-sponsored Assembly bill 820, legislation which would prohibit the public disclosure of information in an application for a pistol license with exceptions for prosecutors and police conducting an active investigation. Senator Ball will be introducing similar legislation, immediately. The bill would protect lawful gun owners from being targeted by thieves for firearm burglaries and eliminate a database criminals could use to extort their identity-theft victims.

Hooray for this common-sense politician!
