I am looking to get my first 308. I am not using this for hunting so I am not going to be trekking thru the mountains with this, just want to get something in this caliber and in 16". I have been looking at Bushmaster ORC and DPMS Oracle, but keep getting drawn to the Rock River Arms Elite Operator. From what I have been reading I don't see too much of a down side to this model but I have read that it takes FAL mags and it doesn't have the same numbers of options as far as changing parts. I don't think besides optics and a sling I would be adding much to the rifle so I am not too worried about adding much else (so I say now) besides optics. What are the down sides to the FAL mags if any? Looks like currently I can get into one for $2500 or less, any other recommendations in this price range and under?

The price you mention is about $1K over MSRP, but in this time of panic buying, what isn't priced that way.
Magazine prices are through the roof also.
I haven't heard any negatives about RRA LAR 8, or the FAL metric & L1A1 inch magazines.

Thanks for the feedback. I know this isn't necessarily the best time to get into one as far as cost, but no telling what the prices might be like in another three months...
Keep in mind the front site is proprietary to the RRA becasue of their rails.
If you want to put irons in it, you're stuck with theirs.

Personally, unless you have an extra $3K to "splurge" on ammo, i'd invest in something else.

Things are starting to come around. LGS has DPMS AR10 in .308 for $1100. Impingement, not piston.
I'm thinking my le6920 needs a big brother.
