As gun owners we need to STOP this pessimistic attitude IMMEDIATELY that a new "ban" is going to take place. Lately I've been hearing talk like "when the new ban goes into effect" and "the coming ban" etc, as if this is already a done deal. WAKE UP, because its not a done deal! That kind of attitude comes from defeatism and will lead to failure!

We all need to realize that since the last ban expired, this industry has grown tremendously and there are millions of new law-abiding, responsible gun owners out there just like you!

You MUST take three minutes out of your day from searching for guns, magazines, parts etc, and take that time to WRITE YOUR REPRESENTATIVES at all levels of government. Local, state and most importantly at the federal level. Think LONG TERM! That's how the other side operates and we need to as well.

#1) Regardless if your representative is on the right or the left they still need to hear from you. Even if your rep is a huge 2nd amendment person or you live in an area surrounded by folks that don't agree with you... they still must hear from you!

#2) You must understand that your actual representatives will likely not read your letter/email. HOWEVER their STAFFERS WILL read them. This is a NUMBERS GAME. The staffers retain simple counts for their bosses (your representatives) of how many emails/letters came in FOR or AGAINST additional gun control legislation. The MORE WE WRITE IN the better it is for us and it puts them in a PICKLE.

#3) Keep your email/letter SHORT and SIMPLE. ONE or TWO sentences MAX. Don't try to laboriously argue a point; rather simply state your position and note that you will be educating your friends/family and anyone you can talk to, to vote them out of office if they vote for any new restrictions on your rights.

#4) Don't let the other side shout our side down. Make your voice heard. The consequences of NOT acting will lead to LONG TERM repercussions.

Do you want to be FINGERPRINTED and PHOTOGRAPHED like a common criminal and not be able to will your private property to your heirs? You should be OUTRAGED and offended by the suggestion!

Write your representatives today! Its EASY!

I am a casual owner who like to shoot and hunt. I'm sick of some of the defeatism (not here) prevalent amongst many gun owners nationwide and just expressing my views to encourage as many as people as possible to write in to their reps as that is all we really have available to us. Welcome to the forum and God Bless You! Absolutely well said and I couldn't agree with you more. I was in a local gun shop today and ranted for a minute about all the "knee-jerk" reactions in the gun community regarding the proposed "Assault Weapons Ban". I also made a bit of noise about the price gouging and inflation that appeared to happen over night. Far as I can tell, we are all pretty like-minded here (with the exception of NYNCO). ;)

Here's my note to Ed P...

Ed,

As one of your constituents I thought you should know where I stand on gun safety. There is a lot of emotion right now on this issue. The 2nd amendment is an essential part of what makes america the greatest nation on earth. We all want violence against the innocent to stop, but you have to understand that disarming or restricting the rights of law abiding citizens like me won't end this senseless violence and will make more people potential victims. I hope you have the wisdom to see that the non-stop violence on tv, in movies, games and elsewhere is the fertile field where the seeds of these despicable acts are sown. Please live up to the office you hold and speak for me and the many other law abiding gun owners in your district.

I've already hit Lambourn's, Udall's, and Bennet's official web pages. You can leave a message for them on the contact page of each one. They all ask for addresses, so multiple entries might be discarded, but I'm going to follow them up with snail mail.

Thanks for reading this thread folks. Feel free to email the post to friends/ family and re-post other places. Again, its a NUMBERS game! Not a quality of content or arguing your point game.

This thread should be bumped as this subject reaches the mainstream of "top of the news" topics again. When something is actually being debated or in committee is when the tally's will really be paid attention to.

Encouraged to see a lot of responses on this thread and good work everyone for writing. Remember that this is all in the very early stages and be ready to send in more comments as things progress.

Feel free to REPOST the OP other places and lets bump this as soon as something actually makes it to committee.

Remember that in 1994 when the original one passed, the other side controlled both the house and senate and it only passed by something like 2? Votes. Today the situation is very different... likewise after 94' did anyone ever imagine the bill would expire? Never say never, the future always holds unknowns!

Above all stay positive and don't let yourself get wrapped up in any sense of defeatism. We can do this.

Hi all -
I got a response from one of our CO Senators and all-in-all the canned response was "neutral" with regards to gun-control. Neither for or against.

When you see responses like this, it is to be interpreted as the rep is still open to hearing from people and has not yet taken a stance.

Hence keep emailing your CO Reps, (house and senate) if you have not already done so! The more they hear from us BEFORE anything is brought to the floor, the less likely these proposals can even make it into committee!

Thanks for reading

I also received canned responses from the CO Senators on the Federal Level. State level I've received four replies so far:

I assure you that I too respect the Constitutional right to bear arms.
Moreover, data indicate that gun-control legislation does not prevent
tragic shootings. I fully expect a great deal of pressure from those
who want control over all facets of our lives. In the hope of
balancing that pressure, you may want to attend hearings and, if you
are willing, speak as you have written.

Thank you for your message and your defense of our treasured Constitution.

Respectfully,
Representative Spencer Swalm

Mr. Valdez,

I am a great supporter of our second amendment rights and I would indeed oppose any new gun control measures which will be considered here in the state. I am however, not going to be in office after January 9, as I did not run again. Also, you probably know this, but I have no control over what's done at the federal level with Feinstein's bill.

With no checks and balances in the state legislature for the next couple of years, and unless the Governor will veto bad legislation, it's totally up to the Democrats to make good decisions about what bills they run because they are now in control in the House, the Senate and in the Governor's office.

Sincerely,
Rep. B.J. Nikkel

Thanks for writing,

You can count on me to vote to protect the Second Amendment.

When the bills are finally introduced, you should write your Senator and Representative individually and ask them how they plan to vote on the specific bill(s). I don't think you need any other statements, just tell them where you live and that you want to know how they will vote.

You also should try to go to any town meetings that they have and ask them in person in front of everyone.

good start you have going!

We have a local CO rep that has posted, and i am starting to use his advice and just "ask" what an elected officials stance is. Everyone knows they play the fence except when it comes down to casting their vote. I am fairly certain both our democrat senators will vote for gun legislation. The house reps are where I feel we have our chance.

The LATEST, link below (write in if you haven't already folks!) (http://nraila.org/get-involved-locally/grassroots/write-your-reps.aspx)

Key takeaways:

- include measures that would not need congressional approval and could be quickly implemented by executive action

- reinstating an expired ban on assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition (whatever that means)

- creating a new database that would allow the ATF to track all gun sales

- track the movement and sale of weapons through a national database
