View Full Version : How much rail for a Magpul AFG2?

I've got a YHM 9840 carbine forearm (http://yhm.net/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=2_4_49&products_id=92) on my AR and back when I bought it you didn't get any hunks of rail with it (now you get a 3" and a 6") so I just bought a 3" rail to accommodate my short MP5 style VFG.

So can I fit a Magpul AFG2 (the smaller one) on 3" of rail or do I need to hunt order a 6" chunk of rail first?

And does anyone know if I have to order it from YHM or is that something I can get from any manufacturer (are the mounting holes standardized)?

I believe the afg2 requires the larger rail.I have an extra 6" section of magpul rail if you need it.

Thanks jhood ... that answers the question (looks like I could get it to ride a 3" rail, but would be better off with a 6")

After some investigation... my findings are contrary to some of the earlier posts.

It sits just fine on a 1.25" rail. All you need is 1 slot to slide the screw through. Tighten it down, and it is very solid. According to Magpul, the AFG2 should sit on at least 3" of rail. They also say that the AFG1 (pictured below) should sit on at least 4" of rail, but in my little test seen below, it was rock-solid on my shortest rail. It looks goofy how I have it set up (I just used the mounts that I had installed for a bipod), but there was absolutely no wiggle on that tiny rail. I think you'll be fine with whatever rail you want.

X's 2. Here is mine but I played with mounting it on the short section also.

I have the larger AFG instead of the AFG2, it fits my hand better. I mounted it on the next to longest magpul rail piece. It fits perfectly and is very solid. I think the shorter piece will eventually have problems due to the stress of rocking from the grip.

What I'm going to experiment with on my Troy rail is to avoid adding the rail piece and installing the AFG directly to the Troy alpha rail. This will make the AFG sit more flush

Please post pictures when you do! TIA

here is the concept...

Here is the AFG2 on a rail

Here is it on the troy handguard directly

I plan to drill holes into the AFG2 to line up with the backing of the troy accessory rails. So there will be two mounting points.

This is the video that gave me the idea

That is a sweet idea with the direct mount Kwando! I found the right rail section for the afg2 after some trial and error, it's the L5 rail section from magpul that will fit the full length. It looks like kwando's way is going to be a alot more flush though. Good find

I don't use it anymore but my AFG2 was always rock solid when I moved much of it forward of the rail piece.
