Are the AT4( I think that is what the big one is) and LAW tubes even reloadable ??

I know they are just something someone picked up as memorabilia but CNN makes it out like they were a " big deal"

Saw a post about it on Facebook. Apparently people are going apeshit about "grenade launchers" being turned in in a buy back program in Las Angeles. In reality they were AT-4 training tubes (just an empty fiberglass tube that looks evil... can't be reloaded and is entirely harmless).
1. Are people really stupid enough to freak out over a training device?
2. Kudos to whoever got the govt to pay them for something comparable to a PVC pipe.

What made me sad was adding up the value of all the AR's on the table .... I could buy a modest house ( in colorado) with the sales of those

Those are one time use launchers. More than likely someone took them after some type of live fire exercise to keep as a souvenir.

I have a friend who works for LAPD and he used to be on the gun task force that's responsible for handling this buy back. He says its nothing more than a BS political scheme that does nothing. All of the people who turn in guns are libs who usually acquired the guns because a relative passed away and left their collection. Many of the guns have to be x rayed and in some cases charged with C4 to ensure the chamber is cleared, apparently most are rusted out antiques. Last year only one gun turned in was a crime gun and due to the no questions asked policy they couldn't follow up on it as a lead.

No kidding. A trip to Home Depot and a guy could mass produce those.

I love CNN's "expert" can't tell the difference between an AT4, LAW, and an RPG. How do I get a gig like that?

Saw a news report on this a few days ago, the reporter said "Most of these guns will be destroyed" what happens to the rest ? Do they go to the private collections of the collecting officers ? Or are they kept as plant pieces for bad officer shootings ?

I'm surprised they got anything for turning it in. It is seriously just a tube... certainly not a firearm and is not reloadable, even IF you could find a suitable projectile..

I saw that at one of the buybacks, a lady brought in a genuine STG 44 and the cops told her that they would not accept it because its value. I guess her grandfather or father picked it up in Europe during WW2. At least those cops were nice enough to tell her it was worth more than a grocery card!

that is the irony
They are bundled up into lots and sold to FFLs around the country.
Example:

We have changed this listing to just assorted handguns. Some will be trades and some will come from confiscated piles.

All of the guns taken in from the buy back are sent to a steel mill in Fontana, CA. They are melted down and turned into rebar that will be used to build freeways.

I liken it to finding a SPLIT shotgun shell casing.

Yeah, that was dangerous... once.

I have one of the AT-4 trainers in my garage. Its just fiberglass and plastic with an aluminum sleeve.

Since we're talking dummy/spent AT-4s, just curious, but what kind of damage could a live one do if you shot it at your average house from 100yds? Just put a whole in the wall and beat the crap out of whatever room was behind the wall?

Wonder how many times each of these guns get turned in? Ya know, keep the budget low, keep the numbers high, and the shock factor up. Just have some off duty types go turn in some already confiscated guns?

Yeah, we all heard about that, but has anybody heard any MORE about it? Hmmm?

Or someone figured out they can buy these "rocket launchers" for cheap and sell them for 200 bucks every time they have one of these buy backs ...

I am speaking just out of my ass guessing, but as far as I knew the AT4 was more of a melted superheated penetrator for tanks, so it might just put a big round hole and blast through the whole house. Maybe they do have more HE variety available. I've seen plenty of video's with Javelins and such though used on rooms/floors/roofs with insurgents in them overseas.
