I actually just watched that movie last night and was wondering why we haven't heard of a company attempting to incorporate this technology into a firearm. Granted, it would be extremely expensive to retrofit ALL firearms, and criminals wouldn't bring their guns in to get them upgraded, it could prevent further guns from getting into criminal hands.
On the flip side, just like fake id's are made, they would find a way to bypass the technology and still be able to use the firearm one way or another.

There's talk about it now. It's neat sure, but I'm not going to trust a mass produced chip to verify my identity before I'm able to use my weapon.

two words "Lowest Bidder"
it is not new tech. It is also not reliable (got gloves). If it was, police would be all over it since they are most likely to have their own weapon used against them.
Another thing to malfunction or break. Keep things simple and durable. I can see why some politicians would love guns to be more unreliable and impossible for other family members to use. Incredibly stupid idea.

I couldn't agree more. I'm not in the least bit for it, however I haven't seen anything about it and we have the technology. Then again, we have the technology for cars to drive themselves, personal jetpacks, and probably even hovercars.

Exactly.
And...just how long will it take the gov to make an item that scrambles that component and perminantly disable the firearms in an area? Or for a criminal to make an item that unlocks all of these in his general area?

It'd be just one more crap being imposed onto American gun owners, while the bad guys will just hack or bypass the security feature.

And that's my other concern.

So you got tossed to the pavement by the bad guys and skinned your hands but no matter, you whip out your ultra-highspeed Les Baer Custom with the extended mag and palm-scanning security just to hear it say "Identity Unconfirmed. Reset and try again."

That and then guns would also be susceptible to EMP's, which is right when you're likely going to need them most for protection.

Diabetes type blood tester that pokes your palm and then uses the on-board dna profiler? [Dunno]

There are criminals breaking DoD Level encryption.
People hacking cars
Do you think a microchip on a gun is going to deter them?

Yep, that would suck ass. I would never trust it.
I don't even like a safety on my pistols
Didn't Colt or S&W try that? I remember a press conference where they brought the gun in from a test fire and the gun wouldn't work (overheated(?) after a few rounds)?
They dropped the project after that.
Current state of the art AES256 attacks take 2^126 operations. Assuming the criminal had unlimited resources, the sun would supernova before he found an answer. I mean, we are talking about the age of the universe times one billion. There isn't enough energy in the Earth to power enough 90% efficient computers to perform even one of these attacks.
So, no, there are no criminals (or anything else) breaking AES256 yet. There's an XKCD cartoon about something very similar.

A microchip on a firearm would just lead to all sorts of fun things, really. Why do you think there aren't any electronic solenoid fired commercial firearms? Because (other than having to carry a charged battery to function) that firearm + a 555 timer and various parts costing under $1 from RadioShack = selectable rate of fire limited only by the physics of the timing of the blowback and feed mechanisms. It would be very similar to the Metalstorm (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AEu9LLQpOF8) weapon, but handheld.

Here's a few things that Q-Branch developed for us "00" agents.
I'll share them with you, but please note :
They are highly HUSH-HUSH, so don't pass any intelligence data along to KGB agents or Taliban operatives, OK ?
