Congress approves ‘fiscal cliff’ measure
...
Three Democrats voted against the measure, including liberal Tom Harkin (Iowa), and moderates Thomas R. Carper (Del.) and Michael F. Bennet (Colo.).
Bennet complained that the bill would do little to reduce record budget deficits. According to the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office, the measure would cause the national debt to be $4 trillion higher by 2022 than if all of the cliff’s tax increases and spending cuts had been allowed to take effect.

In the middle of all the angst over possible gun control, I thought it would be a good time to find something good our politicians have done. Please join me in giving Senator Bennet a heart felt "Thank You" for taking a stand. I was pleasantly surprised to see him stand up for responsibility in government.

The only reason He did it, is because he realizes he could lose reelection big time.

I'm totally okay with that reasoning, if that is his reason.

Isn't that the point? I mean, politicians are supposed to do what we want them to. If they don't vote for something because they think the majority would vote them out if they did vote for it, then they are doing what their constituents want, no?

He's got four years before he's up for re-election. Plenty of time for people to forget. It's Udall that should have made this stand but didn't. He's relying on his base and name recognition to get him through the next election cycle.

And knew it would pass anyways. It is common practice by both parties to allow certain representatives to vote against or for a bill as a feel good measure for their constituents if they know it will go the way they want it to anyways.

I dont see any reason to thank Sen. Bennett. This assclown is one who has helped get us there in the first place.

Yet it still passed anyways. Maybe he needs to talk his buddies into doing the right thing as well.

He's still an idiot. I expected at least a reasonable generic email reply to mine on gun-control. Yeah, I know wishful thinking.

his form response to me. i didnt actually contact him saying anything about newtown or shootings. i just said no more gun laws.etc.

Dear HBAR

Thank you for contacting me regarding the tragedy of the Newtown shooting. I appreciate hearing from you.
The unthinkable events which took place in Newtown, Connecticut are staggering. Like all Colorado families, my family was shocked and deeply saddened by the violence, and my heart is with the victims, their families and the entire state of Connecticut. As Coloradans, we know how this type of tragedy can shake a community to its core and in the aftermath of these abhorrent acts our priority should be on supporting the survivors and families, and healing our communities.
We must have a real discussion in this country about finding ways to stop these types of senseless shootings. While no one law is likely to prevent a deranged individual committed to taking life from doing so, we should have a comprehensive and civil conversation about finding the right and most effective solutions to protect our communities and particularly, our children. This includes exploring a number of areas, such as mental health services, violence in our culture, and a review of our gun laws.
A Sandy Hook Support Fund has been established by the Newtown government to provide the victims and their families with support services during this difficult time. You can access it at http://www.newtown-ct.gov/Public_Documents/index. In addition, if you or a loved one is having difficulty coping with recent tragedies, including those of Aurora and Newtown, the Disaster Stress Helpline can be reached at 1-800-985-5990 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Let us all continue to keep the communities of Newtown and Aurora in our thoughts and prayers.

I value the input of fellow Coloradans in considering the wide variety of important issues and legislative initiatives that come before the Senate. I hope you will continue to inform me of your thoughts and concerns.
For more information about my priorities as a U.S. Senator, I invite you to visit my website at http://bennet.senate.gov/. Again, thank you for contacting me.

Sincerely,

I look at it like dog training, except there's no shock collar available. :)

Praise when they do something good, punish when they do something bad. Like others have stated here, someone on Bennet's staff is at least counting responses to see what matters to constituents. That helps them gauge what they can get away with.

Ditto. But then I didn't expect anything else. Have yet to hear from Udall, but I expect his won't be any different. Still waiting Gardner's response too.

1) Bennett is a liberal, not a "moderate".
2) He WILL vote for whatever gun control law that comes down the pike (which will do significantly greater damage to his ability to get re-elected than voting for the Fiscal Cliff bill would have).

I rather suspect that I would disagree with Senator Bennet's reasons for voting against the Fiscal Cliff legislation (as Zundfolge pointed out, he's a liberal, not a moderate, in anyone's eyes but the Washington Post or MoveOn) but I will appreciate and applaud his voting the right way for once. Hope to see more "correct" votes from him for whatever reason (although I'm not going to hold my breath waiting for it).

For the record, here's the follow up from Bennet.

Dear Inconel710:
Thank you for contacting me about the fiscal cliff agreement. I appreciate hearing from you.
The agreement extends the Bush-level tax cuts for individuals earning less than $400,000 annually and families earning less than $450,000. It also extends unemployment insurance and some other additional expiring tax provisions.
While the bill had many positive items, such as the extension of unemployment insurance, tax relief for most Americans, and an extension of the wind production tax credit, I ultimately voted against the agreement because it failed to make meaningful progress on reducing the deficit.
For four years in my townhall meetings across the state, Coloradans have told me they want a plan that materially reduces the deficit. This legislation did not meet that standard and failed to put in place a real process to reduce the debt down the road. Without a serious mechanism to reduce the debt, I was unable to vote for the bill. The bill passed the Senate on an 89-8 vote and the President signed it into law on January 2, 2013.
Putting the country on a sustainable fiscal path and bringing our debt under control is incredibly important to our economy and our standing in the world and is a top priority for me. I remain committed to continue working with any Republican or Democrat willing to address this problem in a serious way. Colorado's kids deserve no less.

Michael F. Bennet

The bill had enough votes to pass. So now Bennet gets to vote against it so he can posture himself as a reformer working for us. It's pre-agreeed upon bullshit that we should be to stupid to see through. Bennett is not our friend. He was hand picked to be a party line cog in the Democratic Party Machine.
