I thinking about getting a field grade M1 for a Tanker build and was wonder what your experiences with this grade of rifle and the order process has been like...any info is appreciated. I have some match scores for verification of marksmanship activity and this seems to be an approved club to meet purchase eligibility. Do you mail in verification to CMP? Are field grade weapons good to go?

I ordered a Service Grade on 11/19/12, it was processed on 11/29/12, and picked up from FedEx on 12/21/12. Overall smooth, send in all the info they ask for on the site. Personally don't know enough about the M1 but mine looks used but beautiful in that used sort of way. It was made sometime between 1954 and 1956 according to the serial number ranges. Don't have a comparison with the Field Grade, sorry.

I was just looking into CMP required membership as well to buy a rifle. How do we prove membership here?

How do we prove membership here?

I believe that was in the early days of the forum.

Just joined the Garand Collectors Assoc. for $25 - does the trick.

Just checked the CMP list of approved clubs and this is still one. Any idea how member confirmation could or was provided in the "early days"?

I believe a copy of my ccw permit satisfied the marksmanship requirement, been a few years though. There's a lot ways for the affiliation requirement too, check out their list, you may already be a member of something.

And you want a "tanker"? You might contact www.shuffsparkerizing.com and see if he has any ready to go. He's supposed to build the best ones.

This site is no longer affiliated, It ended last year I believe. As for your question, You'll never be disappointed by the Field Grade Grands. They may be a bit rough on the finish, But I've gotten several good shooter in that Grade. I'd go that route since your rebuilding it anyways.

+1 on what Rondog said about Shuff. His "Mini G" is extremely reliable (many tankers aren't and it's better looking IMHO).

What kind of stock are you gonna do with the tanker? Use the standard or a pistol grip?
