install the front take down pin detent and spring in WITHOUT the takedown pin tool?

This is impossible, especially after 2 whiskeys. The good new is I still have both eyes
and did not break anything....

Tips, tricks, simple solutions?

use a razor blade to compress the detent into the lower. Then slide in the take down pin. After it is in, slide out the razor blade.

I thought about a small screwdriver or pocketknife, but that should work too!
Thanks!

That's exactly what I do as well. However I would let the whiskey wear off a bit before playing with the razor blade....

I've just used the pin itself, no tools. I do it inside a plastic baggy since it usually takes three tries.

I love the chopsticks idea, though. I'll try that next time. I suppose a garden rake would work just as well.

Just take your lower and parts kit to Bert @ BP Tactical and drop it off. Then pick it up the next day completely assembled and tweaked to perfection.
The few bucks that he will charge will outweigh the frustration and chasing small parts around your house.
If you offered the right brands of premium cat food, he may even barter.

I use a utility knife with an old blade. You can also make the "tool" for about $3 and 5 minutes of time. Go to Home Depot and buy a 1/4" clevis pin and drill the hole out to fit the pin and spring. I've heard you can do the same thing with a 1/4" wooden dowel for even cheaper.
