I'm selling a rifle and I'd rather make the transaction in a public place. Any recommendations? I've never sold a firearm before.

I like Gander mtn, Sportsmans warehouse, ect. People don't freak out as much in those parking lots as there are commonly guns going in and out.

+1. Your favorite LGS is a good place too.
ETA: now that I think about it, I may be wrong on this one. I think I remember someone recently saying something about a private transaction being a legal issue when on the premises of an FFL holder. . . I'm sure someone will chime in soon and let us know if this is right.
Sportsmans, Gander, Dicks sporting goods. If you were in a more rural area i'd suggest sherman williams paint, autozone, king soopers....

Definitely some where people wont freak out and call the cops. If dealing with someone from armslist i would say some where well lit and take a friend. Sportsmans or somewhere is best.
If dealing on armslist of with people you dont know about places like wal mart are good because the parking lot has cameras in case it goes south.
Wal Mart parking lots, way out away from the door usually works well. Same with Lowes and Home Depot.
If the buyer has feedback (lots of it) here on this board, you can usually be pretty confident that things will go just as planned.
Stay away from post office parking lots if it is a complete firearm.
Be safe.
I try to use Walgreens parking lots

Great ideas... I'm a little nervous as it's from Armslist and the dude offered me a lot of money for my AR. Which I openly posted as asking way to much but if it'll pay to take my wife on the honeymoon she never had so be it, it is what it is.

In noo way an attorney but, If it is a private transaction I don't see an issue with it. Shoot I am an FFL and if two guys wanted to do a transaction in my presence (on premises) I don't think there would be an issue. I am open to learn as well so maybe an attorney will chime is......

Be sure and wear a black ski mask if cold outside. Don't want to catch a cold. [Coffee] JK!! I like Sportsman's, Bass-Pro, any sporting shop or public area in the back lot.
I'm partial to Home Depot, almost everyone knows where there is one.
Granted I have only made one such public transaction but, I had the last minute thought to bring a rifle bag with me. Might ask the buyer if he has such a bag.

I'd go with Sportsmans given your location. If you're selling a gun a lot more then it's worth it sounds a bit fishy. I'd want to be somewhere where others have guns just incase it went south.
Bad places: the lobby of the local police station, whatever hotel Obummah happens to be at, schools, movie theaters, dark fields that can only be accurately located with GPS coordinates, the steps of the state capitol, pretty much anywhere after dark.
Good places: Previously mentioned places above, during the day, with a well armed friend alongside.
I don't deal with Armslist folks, mostly only members here that are known to me personally or by reputation. Most times, it ends up being at my place of business.

Thanks, that's going to be the plan. With the AR15 frenzy I can't help but try to sell for a ridiculous amount. Especially if it'll pay for airfare to thailand :)

Don't forget the Tac.vest loaded with magazines and cami clothing........[ROFL1]
Also, don't sell ammo with the firearm unless it is in separate, closed container. And defiantly no loaded magazines. Unless the buyer is well known to you. Use a gun case or other covering to transfer from your vehicle to the buyers. You don't need some libertard freaking out and calling the police after catching a glimpse of an evil modern sporting rifle.
Take someone else. Have them sit in a separate car with a clear view of the transaction. If you have a CCW, use it. If you don't, keeping it in your car is legal.
I live in Thornton, and would be willing to help if you need assistance. PM me.
Be safe.

or even tanner gun show.
Make sure buyer runs BGC if its at gunshow or its premises. I would keep it simple and stay away from gun shows.
I only meet shady people in dark alleys.. Watch out if they roll up in a mini-van.
parking lot of a police station should be legal
Walmart, or even tanner gun show.
Selling a firearm in tanner's parking lot without a background check is bad juju, isn't it?

I think I'd make sure they knew what you were doing before I did that. Current atmosphere would dictate that I think.

Agreed, but if you don't have a CCW, just open carry. Hell, you might want to just open carry regardless.... it's not a bad time to use that right.

My next choice would be the "Playa's Club", but you might end up spending money...

I always use a very public location, during daylight, in a location with security camera coverage. I usually bring my wife along too.

I'm almost 100% positive you can sell a firearm at an FFL with no issues. (unless the owners don't care for it)
Why I say this is if the gun is not in their books it has nothing to do with them. I believe that if a gun is held for more then 24 hours at a shop it has to be recorded in the books.
I try and do walmarts or some well lit place always have a buddy with you as well and it does not hurt to carry either.

Walmart and bring a friend!
If you are the seller, I'd worry less about getting robbed and more about some jerk shortchanging you or paying with counterfeit bills . . . apparently, that's happened a few times recently. Take your time to count the money.
Do the transaction during daytime in a large well traveled parking lot, but parked away from most of the other cars.
Google the guy's name, email, and phone number to see if anything weird comes up.
If the guy's email response gives you a bad feeling due to wording or tone (slang, attitude, evasive) don't deal with him.
If the guy shows up and he looks or acts like a dirtbag, especially if he has a carload of buddies, feel free to drive off.
But I'd relax about it for the most part. HE is the one showing up with the cash. I've met dozens of people from armslist and had minimal issues. Most of the dirtbags give you a few clues that they're a dirtbag in their first email. I love it when you google their name and their facebook page shows them acting stupid with their dirtbag friends. If the guy is articulate and respectful and google says he's gainfully employed you have nothing to worry about. If something is giving you a bad feeling about the deal, either don't do it or offer to meet him at a FFL for the transfer.
3 or more people = a gun show and requires a BGC. just saying.

I was looking to see if someone was going to point that out. One of those things along with 922r that I have never seen anyone charged with.
All of the above.... I remember reading about some BG passing some fake bills, feel the cash and bring one of those counterfeit pens (you can get them at office depot)

I've done transactions in lots adjacent to the bank.... always cool....
Burger King parking lot in Castlerock .... any place next to a good place for lunch!

Burger King bathroom in Castlerock .... any place next to a good place for lunch!
Didn't Humpty Hump.. once get busy there?
I'd recommend a place that doesn't have any security cameras in the area. But those damn things are everywhere nowadays and are hard to spot. Someone seeing the transaction might call in a MWAG on you like what happened to a couple members recently outside a theater, but there's also the security of having the transaction on tape if something goes wrong....which it shouldn't. So, cameras could be a good thing or a bad thing.
Personally, I've never had a problem with anyone here or anyone else either.

Incorrect. ONCE it is in possession of the FFL in the book it is suppose to go.

well I was supposed to meet the guy today, couldn't go through with it though. Call me crazy but I enjoy the rifle too much. For those wondering I was offered $3500 cash for my Noveske. Instead of selling it I think I'll be buying an aimpoint for it :D
Thanks for those that offered to accompany me too. I talked to the buyer on the phone today and did a little research online and found out he was legit.

So you agreed not only to sell an item, but a meeting place and you pulled out? IMHO that's as bad as agreeing to buy and backing out.

Nope, I told the guy to give me a few days to think about it. If we were going to make a deal it was going to be today. I called him and said I was going to keep it.

Well, if you sold it you might never have been able to get another one that nice. They are getting scarce and the price keeps going up.

Aww man......... I was following this to see how the meeting went. Oh well, you can always have a honeymoon, i said to my wife many years ago when we wed........we never went.
As mentioned above though, you still have a sweet rifle and that's a good thing.

Well that's different. Nothing worse then people not keeping their word.
Now hearing its a Noveske I'm glad to hear you kept it too. I love mine, even if I had to piece mail it together.

Almost correct. As long as the owner picks it back up the same day, it need not be entered into the FFLs A&D book. This is because federal regs allow 24hrs for it to be entered in the A&D book - it doesn't have to go in there automatically.

Things must have changed then. It used to be a requirement that the inbound record WAS to have been entered at the end of the business day. Guess they have loosened the requirement somewhat.

That's going to be a "pre-crash Noveske". The ones made this year and beyond (if they're even available) will not be as valuable.
