I'd say some sort of pole-arm as well, but then you run into maneuverability issues the same way you do with a rifle. So long pole-arm for outside, short staff for inside.

Or in the real world, my katana forged from railroad rails, couple of throwing tomahawks and two police clubs. Just grab the perpendicular short handles of the clubs and use as an extension of your arms. Short end out with long end down your forearm for defense and reverse it to extend your reach.
