You can bet the antis will be all over this in no time. Not much detail yet, but i can tell you that good men with guns rarely let bad guys take them hostage and would prevent this garbage more often than not.

thats not far from me.

So are we going to predict details as they come available? Mine are:

Mentally disturbed fellow with a history of issues
handgun or shotty on scene but it will be reported that an assault weapon was present overseeing all activities
neighbors will say he was a loner type who kept to himself...

I got stuck in the traffic around the scene on my way to work this morning. It's only a few miles from my house.

Yup, I woke up, turned on the news, saw this and said "Son of a....".

Not again... Come on man?

Do you think that all the media attention these guys get is prompting more and more attention hungry people to do this more often?

What could be a solution?

I own a rental unit at Hampden and Chambers. I'm sure this will do wonders for the property value.

Realizing that there are crazy people out there, putting distance between yourself and them and then preparing to defend yourself when distance isn't an option.

Get that common sense BS outta here. WE all know that legislation is the only REAL solution.

Pretty sure Aust328 meant his question with a bit of sarcasm. I'm sure your solution was meant to have something to do with preventing the media for publicizing these types of activities to deter others from committing similar acts just for the publicity.

If that's the case, I completely overlooked his intent.

Well on the upside it is a hostage situation. If his intent was to just kill a bunch of people without any rhyme or reason, it would already be done. So this person wants something...

Or if I'm wrong then you just gave him a serious answer. [Beer]

OMG OMG OMG OMG.

Ok. Hostage situation in a house... this isn't a 'not again' situation, unless of course you're talking about media coverage. But oh.. It happened in a kind of shit neighborhood, so the media doesn't care. At 3am. Someone came home from the bar and found his 'boo' in bed with another man.. Nothing to report here.

DING DING! We have a winner!

Do you think that all the media attention these guys get is prompting more and more attention hungry people to do this more often?

DING DING! A close runner up!

People with the aforementioned characteristics will view media attention as a sort of stardom for their issues, thus prompting more and more volatile situations. The more the media splashes their pictures across the screen and repeats their names the more this sort of stuff will happen. Its ok to acknowledge the event happened but leave it at just that, an acknowledgement, dont make it front page news of a newspaper or even headline news on a nightly news report.

I've been trying to put off moving till my kids are out of school. Seems the bubble of slum has finally reached too close to home. I may have to move sooner than I wanted.

Home invasions are stopped pretty well if you're armed. Seems like the victims may not have been about to defend themselves. My condolences.

It was a drug thing. His wife told the cops he had been up for four days and was high on meth.

My solution, which isn't PC, so you guys won't like it, is to publicly feed the surviving shitheads alive into a woodchipper, televise it, then completely "erase" their existence like the Soviets did in the old days. Let the potential freaks know that not only will they not be famous, they won't be remembered at all. Except for the guy with the mop.

Pancho Villa

My solution is for more good people to have guns, and just shoot the bad guys when they do bad things.

I like my solution better.

The whole "death penalty as a deterrent" thing has been junked many times.

I'm mildly anti-death penalty, mainly because I don't trust the govt to give a man a fair shake in the DMV line, let alone in court, and so would prefer that things be reversible.

I am totally okay with the victim ending things permanently, though. In fact I generally think that's the best-case scenario.

Isn't meth still illegal, oh yeah we have a law for that. Wheel of morality turn turn turn, tell us the lesson we must learn.

no im saying that bastards like him dont deserve all the attention and bs that they get from the legal system. we have corrupted the system to an extent that there are no quick trials anymore, then we spend years allowing them to appeal and live off the government bettering themselves while they spend the rest of their lives in jail. when in his case he did it tough shit your done.

An "appeal" is where an appellate court is asked to decide whether the trial court actually followed the law. You want that taken away?

And also, remember, Illinois had the death penalty for a long time, which they used a lot more often than Colorado. However, neither Chicago nor East St. Louis have especially safe cities to live in.

That is why I said the optimal solution is a dead bad guy on the scene with no harmed good guys or girls.

If you want to take away the appeals process in case of murder, well...I'm sorry, that's a really dumb idea. There are already a ton of people convicted of very serious crimes on flimsy evidence that got all the way through the appeals process and were only much later exonerated through things like the innocence project: http://www.innocenceproject.org/

You can never get the years back, of course, but the idea of murdering innocent people because "well, being sure takes too long and costs too much" sounds like emotion, not reason, talking.

I have a lot of serious problems with the way our justice system is set up and run, anyway, making it "more streamlined and cheaper" is going to make that way worse.

Just going to say I called it.

The death penalty isn't a deterrent because the gallows aren't across the street from the court room. We've created an entire system to house criminals instead of weeding them from society. Who gives a shit about the death penalty.. you spend 10 years in trial.. then another 30 before you're executed. You get to write books and the lot.. Sure the surroundings are confining but you get to be lazy and not do shit.
