Colorado: Mandatory Storage Bill Sent to Senate Appropriations Committee Friday, February 08, 2008 State Senator Sue Windels (D-19) has introduced Senate Bill 49 (http://www.leg.state.co.us/CLICS/CLICS2008A/csl.nsf/fsbillcont3/2B692131807A4AF1872573680052EB4E?Open&file=049_01.pdf), which requires mandatory storage of all firearms. This legislation would force adults to put all their firearms under lock and key or face an undetermined misdemeanor if a firearm is later used in a suicide or crime. This dangerous bill renders homeowners defenseless and gives criminals a clear advantage in home invasions. If passed, SB49 would add to the already cumbersome bureaucracy that affects gun shops, gun shows, or anywhere else firearms are sold, by requiring them to post a sign informing gun-owners that they must lock up their guns.

On Monday, February 4 the Senate Committee on State, Veterans & Military Affairs voted 3-2 to send SB49 to the Senate Appropriations Committee. Please contact the members of the committee and respectfully urge them to defeat this dangerous legislation.

I haven't checked the record, just pushed out what ILA sent.. it's always good to give these folks a call anyway.. reminds them that we aren't asleep and do indeed know what they are doing :)

Hell calling them and just thanking them for a number of things they do right (yeah ain't much I know) can go a long way as well.

I put out a few threads on this on ARFcom. got a decent response. not exactly the firemission I was hoping for, but it looks like it got shot down.

It doesn't mean that it is completely off the books, but more than likely it was thrown in the back burners

I am happy to give you the final report on Senate Bill 49, Senator Windels’ mandatory gun storage bill.

The Senate Appropriations Committee, of which I am member, killed the bill this morning on a 9-1 vote.

This bill initially received support from many Democrats, and I was concerned the measure would pass. But with the help of my Republican colleagues in the Senate and hundreds of Colorado citizens, we convinced them of the error of their judgment.

Your efforts forced Senator Windels to move to lay her own bill over until the day after the Senate adjourns for the summer.

Thank you for your help in preserving freedom and liberty.

Sincerely,

Ted Harvey
