View Full Version : Need Help Transporting new cannon to Ft. Morgan Shoot
Everyone knows when we come out to the machinegun shoots I have the hummer towing the travel trailer, so I'm out of space. I'm looking for someone with a large vehicle and trailer combo to pull our latest acquisition. I just picked up a 20mm Vulcan cannon. Here are couple of pics from when we picked it up last week. Anyone willing to tow??
thanks in advance,
alan

lets see how tough my tundra really is.
it's not that heavy (unloaded) the cyclic rate is between 4-6K per min

We are probably gonna need fork lift to get it in the truck. I tried moving it this morning with the pallet jack and it was straining. It weights a ton.
what's that out of anyway?
thats not the config for any of the VADS (towed or sp)
was it for one of the follow on SRAD systems that never went anywhere?
oh, maybe from some AC130's, back when they ran 20mm (?)
that drum holds lots of rounds, try hand cranking it full! (when electric's not working)

It was out of some aircraft, but I didn't get told.

I could tow it with my Silverado, I reckon, but I don't have a trailer. I was wanting to go to that meet anyway and take the grandson, we've never been. I suppose we could just stuff it in the back of my truck and I could just back it up to the line. You'd have to let me drive it around my neighborhood first, though!

my trailer is full of 49 chevy.
If that system was airborne the only thing that could fit it would be an AC-130...that is crazy wicked...248 pounds seems wayyy too light...the barrel alone would have to way a couple times that...

Do you think Greg has ammo for that?

Last year my Tacoma was was squating pretty good from all the 50 ammo. I suppose now you expect me to drive all the way to Cheyenne Wells with the rear bumper dragging to carry the ammo for that?

Seriously, can you get ammo to make it worth hauling that thing around? How do power it? Will that base/mount keep it from flipping over backward when you fire it? Just wondering.

i suggest the power inverter from Harbor Freight. a few lag bolts into alan's hummer bed and rock on.
i hear ceiner is already offering a conversion kit for the civilian market

I say we put it in the bed of my Pepsi pickup truck and then I'll head on over to the Coca-Cola plant here in the springs and I'll get on the bullhorn and yell, remember when you illegally fired me 10 years ago? I'MMMMMMMMMM BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAACCCCKKKKKKKKKK
:)
I have a dodge diesel. I will do anything to tow that. I only request I stop by my work and say hello to a few of my favorite[Coffee] bosses.[M2][ROFL1]

the barrel assembly is heavy, each bbl is manageable by one person though (BTDT)

Thanks everyone for all the help. We now have everything all worked out.

Looks to me like some kind of mount that would be used in an AC-130 "Spectre".
Late in the 1980's, however, the Air Force (http://www.specwarnet.net/americas/usaf.htm) decided that it needed to upgrade the capacities of the AC-130, and the AC-130U project was begun. The weapons were changed somewhat, with the twin 20mm vulcan cannons being dropped in favor of a GAU-12 25mm rotating cannon.

I'll cut the roof out of my Escort and lower it in through there. Think I'd get pulled over for having that sticking out the top of my car?
