Ok in the event we gotta jet from metro hell back to the Dakota's what vehicle would u recommend. Trip is 360 miles one way.
Jeep tj locked f&r 33 swampers lifted with winch big bumpers and armor with hardtop or soft. Has small trailer. Gets 12 mpg
vw jetta wagon diesel with roof box and ability to tow that small trailer. Gets 40 plus mpg
Honda xr 650r with 5 gallon tank and panniers.
Ill be transporting self/ gf and whatever else. Thoughts ideas suggestions on this.

The route based on weather on and other scenarios would determine the vehicle.
Heres a cople questions for you:
How much fuel do you have on hand?
What is the minimum fuel in your tanks before you refill?
Are your BOB's ready to go?

I say put the swampers on the jetta. Good to go. Should get more than 12mpg still. :)

3/4 ton or 1 ton anything!!!
Prep your Jerry cans for the trip.
Protect the radiator. I don't mean with some crap shit aftermarket brush guard that wads up and kills everything in front of the block.

I've been slowly upgrading my 3/4 ton dodge for this scenario. Next is an L tank for in the bed trying to get 800 mile range fully loaded driving in 4wd.
It sits on 10 ply toyo m/t 35s and the radiator/front end is protected by 750 lbs of bumper/winch/winch cradle welded to the frame. I have a backup fuel filter, oil filter, oil, fuel pump, engine controller, limited onboard air (working on getting full sized setup) larger batteries with extra reserve, stuff to patch tires if need be.
Fully loaded it gets 15mpg in 4wd. 20 if I stay off the pedal and in 2 wheel. The suspension is custom and the equivalent of what vehicles do the baha 1000 using, I just mixed parts from various companies like Carli suspension to accommodate the extra weight of the front end reinforcements.
Still need the 360 amp alternator and bigger inverter as well as a better CB setup, mounts for Gerry cans for extra diesel and to throw a water purification system in it.

Being Serious now, I'd just work on making the jeep more fuel efficient - different motor or smaller tires to get more mpg out of it.
I only get 12mpg with this doing downhill and the engine off.

Unless four wheel drive is necessary, I'd be rolling the Jetta. You'd likely be able to get there on one tank and if you beat the rush, staying on the highway shouldn't be a problem.

Load them both up for the run. Keep enough fuel on hand to start them both out of the garage with a 1/4 tank and make it all the way up on the fuel you have on hand. That way if you can fuel along the way you are gallons ahead, but you don't have to depend on it. Then you have a back up if anything goes down.

honda bad in winter
jetta wagon still pretty bad in winter, especially unplowed roads, and wont be pulling close to 40 with a trailer, if the transmission and rest of the drivetrain survives the trailer load.
jeep, get after it, and blow up shafts or rear driveshaft, its done too.
Id be outfitting the jeep with some more improved drivetrain parts. and forget the other 2.

To dodge guy:
Convert the a/c pump to air. Just remember an inline oiler with air compressor oil in it before the compressor.
Get the bumper etc tied into a lot more than the last 3-4" of frame rail, it wads up like foil. Id make it bolt on as well, any need to reseal the timing case to the block and you need to get everything out of the way in front of the engine.

Haven't had to do the timing cover gasket yet, as far as I know people pull the pumps from a 1st gen dodge to do the a/c compressor to air tank idea. That thought has definitely crossed my mind just don't know where to put a tank.

I'd get the 3/4 ton something and tow the Jeep with it. Jeep can double as cargo hauler and can winch out the truck if it gets stuck. If you run out of road the Jeep should be able to get you where you want to go from there...

...and tow the Jeep with it.
I have been thinking about towing while bugging out (a trailer to hold more supplies) and have come to the conclusion that it wouldn't be in my best interest to tow anything. If you are on a leisurely evac BEFORE the SHTF then that might be ok. But for those that plan to stick around at their primarily location as long as possible and use BO as a plan B, I think towing could get you into trouble. If it's already time for plan B I suspect the roads maybe congested and even dangerous. How many of you could go full speed reverse with a trailer if you were to come across some hostel BGs? I sure couldn't. Just a thought...
I haven't personally done many upgrades to my primary BO vehicle, which is a 3/4 ton, but I'd like too. It is however a FFV which allows me the capability to run ethanol which isn't the most available or efficient fuel but it can be manufactured rather easily if/when gasoline runs out. I keep enough jerry cans filled, rotated and on hand to make two trips with two vehicles to our primary BO location at a rural family property. Running fuel level in vehicles never allowed to get below half tank. Gear will go in the camper shell equipped truck bed and a cargo roof rack.

Go for reliability and capacity. If you are scooting out of town due to natural disaster, the more your vehicle can carry, the better. In a situation like that, everyone's nerves are beyond frayed because in some situations, people realize they will be returning to nothing more than a concrete slab, if that, so if you just happen to own a school bus, that'd be ideal as you could put a lot of important things in it and take them to safety with you. Having followed a couple of conversions of both the deuce and a half and the five ton version, I'd probably go with deuce and a half. Some states require you to get a CDL to drive the 5 ton and the deuce can be found with a multi-fuel diesel that expands your fuel options. Check the Steel Soldiers forum for more information than you can handle on these vehicles. :D

cofi, does a 12v p-pump do well on WVO? I thought about a 4bt or merc build on WVO, but haven't been able to find a good donor.
yea they eat EVERYTHING(wvo, used motor oil etc) only thing that seems to be filters getting clogged prematurely.....but since my friend got a centrifuge set up(he used to have a coffee filter setup) i dont think he has changed a filter......
the problem is finding a cummins cheap out here they get stupid high premiums put on them some guy in kansas is trying to get 3k for a 94 dodge with 350k miles and no title i got a guy local with a 92(ve pump) but again he is asking too much
if you want a car you may want to look into the vw diesels(pre 99) there way more fun then the mercs gonna be

Got to sell this if anyone is interested. It's posted in the Non-Firearms Items for sale, but I thought I would let the survival junkies know as well.
1984 Chevy Blazer, Military CUCV M1009. It is flat black with military type paint. It is a 6.2L (The "J" series) Diesel Engine with 73,000 miles. The vehicle runs very well. All the lights and reflectors are new. I have done regular oil changes on this vehicle while I have owned it using Rotella T motor oil. I also always run a fuel additive to maintain lubrication on the older model diesel engines and parts.
The Blazer has 32 Inch BF Goodrich mud tires with a lot of tread still on them. It also has a nearly new 32 inch mud tire for a spare in the back seat. There are after market front locking hubs on the front wheels. The vehicle is still 24 V but I will give the buyer of the vehicle the directions on how to convert the Blazer to 12 V. I will also give the buyer of the vehicle a military CUCV manual. Blazer has an engine block heater that works very well.
The Blazer is equipped with new lockable center console, front bucket cloth seats from a 1989 civilian model blazer, and a tilt steering wheel from a 1989 civilian model blazer. The vehicle has a new stereo/CD player with after market antenna, and MP3 Player Jack, and Kenwood speakers in the front doors. There is a mounted tachometer on the dash and mounted fire extinguisher on the floor. The 24V Military Radio plug/jack is still present and functions. The screw on protector is also present.
All the windows are tinted except for the windshield. The vehicle is covered in rhino-lining inside the cab on everything behind the front seats including the sides and ceiling. The backseat is still in place and in good condition. All seat belts are present and work well.
There is a mounted large ammo can in the back used as a small tool box. There are a total of four "D Ring" shackles for pulling on the front and back of the vehicle.
The CUCV/Blazer still has functional black-out lights and switches. Four wheel drive (4 Low and 4 Hi) both work. The Blazer is equipped with a K&N air filter. The Blazer has an aftermarket steel Cowl Induction Hood. The military solar panel on the roof (small solar panel) is still present to trickle charge the batteries. It is connected to the batteries and functions.
I was planning on making this the ultimate camping/survival/off road vehicle however my family is growing and need to get rid of it. I am selling with the Blazer a Radio Shack CB Radio with Wilson Antenna, a Rancho steering stabilizer, and KC Lights (with covers) with electrical switches and harness for lights. Those items have not been installed yet but do come with the blazer as I was planning on adding them. Also, the Blazer is equipped with a white dome light on a toggle switch. I have a new dome light that has the option of white or red (for tactical situations) that will come with the blazer. It is not installed but will come with blazer.
The entire rear latch and handle have been replaced. The last one broke and I ordered all the parts from LMC Truck and installed them. No parts in the latch were reused. I have documentation for all the work done to the vehicle.
There is only one minor rust spot and it is only surface rust on the passenger side door. The rust spot can be easily fixed and cleaned with minor work.
This Blazer was purchased from Classic and Performance Mustangs in Denver, Colorado. CPM has recently specialized in purchasing these CUCV trucks and blazers from the military and making sure they are road worthy as well as fixing any issue they found by tearing the vehicle completely apart and rebuilding it.

An ambulance would be easy to convert to a camper-all the accessories are basically there already, except for toilet and shower..
Ambulance probably has more realistic suspension if you wanted to raise it up a little to make it more off road capable.

Depending where they come from some of them are already 4wd so lifting them up for some extra clearance would be easy.
I would definitely want one with a diesel.

Yep.. Diesel, all wheel drive, upgraded suspension, wired for Ham/Radio, compartments and certain version has water reservoir and small gen set already.

Solar Shower and Luggableloo. The shower along with TP FITS inside the 'LL bucket. Small footprint, big help.

I would even get on a couple of the RV forums and see how it is that so many of that crowd registers out of Montana or a couple of other states when they aren't true residents. I was amazed at how pricey it was to register my mid 90's F350 when I moved here.
RV policies can be less because they are used less by definition as well. No one daily drives an RV.

If you consider a diesel, and it's likely the case with that old meat wagon, turbo is your friend, and older pre-emissions are even better. If you can't get diesel, you can run a lot of other stuff in them. ATF, used oil, etc. in a pinch. Would make it a little more versatile in that regard. A small generator would also be a wise complement as well.

true. I insured my camper full coverage for $180 a year. It is a bumper pull though, so no big registration fees that colorado goes after, but insurance was cheap

too much not enough utility if you ask me, no cargo rrom all tv and dvd,
the problem with all these "concept vehicles if getting replacement parts, for the kind of money they are asking i could build a vehicle way more capable with parts that you can strip off anything you would find in a junk yard.
i certainly have built vehicles that in our environment of snow, ice and rocks would walk circles around these things. no the weren't armor plated, but in reality other than urban warefare the knight xv and the marauder are both useless. anything much larger than a newer four door jeep is useless, my cj8 had full width axles and 38 inch TSLs and there were lots of trails i was wishing it was not so wide.

Thats one of the biggest issues with the concept / urban units. Go off road and the foot print left behind , might as well have speakers blasting music with your location.

for the half million price tag you could have 100 acres bug property, off road vehicle, solar system, food supplies, and all the shtf goodies you could ask for
We should have a thread called "My Bug Out Ride" about bug out vehicles that we actually could buy or build, not just in a dream. Every time I come here looking for ideas, I find another vehicle that is not remotely in my budget. With the price of some of these vehicles I would be able to buy property away from everyone and build a fully stocked bunker. Definitely simpler than protecting everything I own while feeding a half million dollar behemoth that's rolling down public roads. I'm not saying get rid of this thread, it's always fun to see ideas for my winning Power Ball ticket.
3/4 ton or 1 ton anything!!!
Prep your Jerry cans for the trip.
Protect the radiator. I don't mean with some crap shit aftermarket brush guard that wads up and kills everything in front of the block.
I am looking at getting a winch bumper/brush guard for my FJ. How do you know which one's are good and which one's are crap from a radiator protecting scenario.
To dodge guy:
Get the bumper etc tied into a lot more than the last 3-4" of frame rail, it wads up like foil. Id make it bolt on as well, any need to reseal the timing case to the block and you need to get everything out of the way in front of the engine.
How do you do this?

I am not into the jeep scene but this might be a case of you get what you pay for. Mtn Man could hook you up. The one on my dodge weighs about 200lbs.
The trick is to make it strong enough and tied in along the frame in a "L" fashion. My old Dakota hitch was custom built and was strong enough that when it got rear-ended the frame folded at the kick-ups. the rear part was still intact. Also in designing something like this triangulation is key. I would think on a jeep that having a 8 point cage that ties into the front frame would be beneficial but that is just thoughts from and old guy.

This is a great idea for the Jeepers/off-roaders on this board. Hell, this would be great behind my fifth wheel. But, in the middle of becoming one of those Jeepers. Once that is done, I will be looking at trailers. Shameless plug for a great idea.
I like the trailer idea. For me though, the JK has the right amount of room to be compact and still carry everything we need in a protected shell. Every time we go camping is a great test cycle.
Saw this guy tonight on I-25.

7.3 with a camper conversion
To dodge guy:
Convert the a/c pump to air. Just remember an inline oiler with air compressor oil in it before the compressor....
Recommendation - we used to do this on our 4x4 rock climbing rigs. Make a heavy steel bumper from explosion proof gas pipe. Seal both ends and put a threaded nipple on one of them for a air fitting. You can then use the low pressure A/C pump to fill the bumper and it will then act as a pretty decent air tank. You would be surprised how much air a decent sized truck tire takes and especially if it popped off the bead. In those situations, you can wrap a "come-along" around the middle of a tire and crank it down to push it against the bead and then air it if you have too.
Chad0724
06-20-2014, 21:19
I have a bmw x5 and a Subaru legacy gt.. even though I think the x5 would do better in a 4x4 situation I would still take the Subaru because of fuel economy. Diesel is always your best bet though for a bug-out vehicle just because it will run on pretty much anything including fryer grease and engine oil.
