So my wife's dad gave me an SKS with a foldable plastic stock and a scope on it with a couple 30 rd and 5 rd detachable mags. Only problem is, I can't get the mags to seat. There doesn't seem to be enough room for the mag to sit in the stock and catch, the top of the mag bumps against the bottom of the receiver. Was this supposed to have one of the internal mags? I did take it to a range and manually loaded a couple of rounds directly into the chamber, so I do know it fires, extracts and ejects.

The guns is a Norinco SKS Sporter in 7.62x39.

are you seating the mags while holding the bolt open?

Yes it came with a fixed 10 round mag. As Goodburban says you have to hold the bolt back to insert the aftermarket mag unless you do this bolt modification. http://www.sksboards.com/smf/index.php?topic=23876.0

This. If you want a reliable 7.62x39 that takes detachable mags just buy an AK.

Since I already have an AK (cheap Roamnian one, but still) I'll just figure out how to slap one of the internal ones in it and see if I can sell the detachable mags on Ebay or something. I might try to find a wood stock for it too.

They are surplus steel ones, not the nicer Tapcos. Though my AK likes the steel ones better than the polymer one I have.

The only decent sks that has quick change mags is the Chinese made sks-d that takes ak mags and even those need tweaking from time to time. Stripped clips are cheap and fast I personally would use the factory magazine too. If you need some stripper clips I'm sure all of us com block fans could dig a few up for you.

Actually I have no stripper clips, and could use a few. I did find what I think is an internal mag in my box of random parts and a bayonet that I think goes with it.

Ok, I found these in my box of stuff. Looks like the wood stock, internal mag and bayonet.

I was lucky enough to find this M, no flaws, operates beautifully with no problems at all.

Picked up 10 AK mags for it for $200 about six months ago, before stuff went haywire in the gun world.

Factory mag and stock. In order to install the mag you need to remove trigger group and have bolt locked back, prior to mag install.

I would reccomend putting back on the factory mag. Thoes aftermarket 20 and 30rd mags never work even the tapco ones have issues. With some pratice you can reload an sks with a stripper clip in no time flat.
