View Full Version : D.U.I deaths VS gun related deaths
This is the info I can find about gun and D.U.I related deaths for 2011. I am sure this has been brought up before and I am not sure how accurate my statistics are, but here we go. It looks like in 2011 there were 12,664 murders in the us, which 8,583 were caused by firearms. Now just in Pennsylvania in 2011 the D.U.I related accidents dropped from 12,426 to 11,805 with 428 fatalities, just in Pennsylvania. In 2010 there were 10,228 people killed in the US by D.U.I drivers alone.

DUIs are ok though because they provide a bunch of revenue for the state through liquor sales and DUI fines.
People drink wine with their dinner every day without incident so it's not a big deal. Anti gunners who have never touched a gun, are mortified by them and have absolutely no comprehension of why you would want or need a gun. Comparing guns to something they do everyday without harming anyone doesn't compute in their heads.
I'm not a statistician but the odds of being killed by a drunk driver than being shot are astronomically higher. Drunk driving is a random crime with a random victim. Only 10-15% of murders are random, the victim almost always knows the perpetrator.
The lesson is that if you are dating an abuser leave, if you have friends that are psycho find new friends, if you dabble in crime.. expect to be shot at some point in your life.
This is totally different. You wouldn't want to reinstate prohibition because alcohol causes deaths, would you? [facepalm]
(Sarcasm intended if you couldn't tell)
I just thought I would post some statistics on a couple of points. I would like to find the percentage of the lives that were saved by a firearm but find it hard to get the info on it, if there is any. You only here about the bad stuff and not the good.
There are a lot of ways to die. I guess some folks like to fixate on some of the least likely ways to go.

It is illegal to drink and drive. we should ban alcohol, and cars, and people who want to drive.
