View Full Version : Questions on 5.56 AK build, info, sources, etc.
So I picked up one of the 80% receivers that were for sale here a while back and was wanting to build it in 5.56 either rifle or pistol. No I have not built one before, only owned one or two ak's before and they never stayed long. Thinking in 5.56 it may stay longer. Point is, is there a kit I can purchase in 5.56, I've done some searching but am unclear on what exactly I am looking for. Any input or help would be great. Thanks.

You gotta get in touch with our noco members. Last time I ask to build a 5.56 AK, I was forwarded this link: K-VAR.com
I didn't pursue it further. i am sure others will chime in shortly.
Make sure you can find magazines for your .223. I started down the same road and ended up with a Golani. Finding Orlite magazines at a reasonable price was much easier than finding .223 AK magazines.
Rachel Ray of the AK was a great help in identifying the differences in bolt stem length and which parts would work with which kits.
Good luck with your build.
Be safe.
Rachel Ray can help.I haven't built one yet.It would be the same as building a regular ak-mechanic wise, but it's own set of parts.
I would suggest looking at the ak specific boards
http://www.theakforum.net/phpBB3/ They have some realy great builders that can walk you through the .556 build
Hope that helps some :)
There are adapters to use AR15/M16 mags in 5.56 AK's. I have no idea how well they work.
For what it's worth.

The Poles use them in their Beryls and from what I saw they work rather well. There out there on the market but they cost a small fortune. There are some companies that are reproducing them.
I have a few promag .223 AK mags I just picked up since this was in the back of my head, now its moved to the front and I want to move a little on it. Absolutely the wrong time I'm sure but hopefully figure out what I need and keep moving slow on it and try not to pay panic pricing on everything. If thats the case, I'll probably shelf it till things mellow out. (yeah right)
