You can't make this up.

About 2:25 in The Rev addresses the issue that Semi-Autos are a threat to national security, because they can shoot down aircraft.

Holmes was near the airport runways, and could shoot down airplanes? Wow. And how old is that fool? He can still barely speak legible English?

And he sure as hell didn't want to touch the matter of gun violence in Chicago vs. all the gun laws & rules there. He went in BIG circles around that one.

Did he have a stroke or something? Fox needed subtitles on that interview.

Did I hear right at about 5:00 where he was saying teachers shouldn't have guns because they might have mental issues? Why would you want them around the kids anyway then?

Sadly, a lot of people do take him serious. The reason I found this clip, was a co-worker was talking about how "she heard on the news that Holmes could have shot down a plane" and she was shocked you can own a weapon that could do that.

At first I thought she was kidding.

semi-auto capable of shooting down a plane is possible highly improbable but possible, horrible argument, but possible

CrufflerSteve
01-14-2013, 14:11
Possible but sort of like winning the lottery. The odds are massively against it but someone wins.

Here's a WWII story about a pilot shooting a Jap plane down with a 1911: http://www.fieldandstream.com/blogs/gun-nuts/2011/06/best-shot-1911-ever

Those were very special conditions.

There's no doubt a semi- auto rifle, or any rifle really, could take down an airplane. Now HITTING it might be a challenge......

As a former Chicagoan, I feel the same way.

Pretty sure birds do more dmg to planes than a semi auto.

I could be wrong maybe the media is just keeping those stories off the air.. you know don't want anymore crazies getting ideas like that.

So wait, Chicago's problems are poverty, drugs, racism and guns? Why isn't he spending more energy on the first three?

Semi autos can shoot down airplanes. That would be [ROFL2] if it weren't so adsurd. Then again, it is a proven fact that box cutters can bring down planes. [Roll1]

Never let the facts get in the way of a good rant.

You guys are missing the point, it's not the bullet that will take down a plane, but the "illegal" green targeting laser.

U.S.C. TITLE 18, CHAPTER 2

Sec. 39A. Aiming a laser pointer at an aircraft

The issue with lasers is not damage to the aircraft, it's blinding the pilots. The pilots that have suffered permanent eye injuries appear to have had lasers stronger than pointers aimed at them but even laser pointers (especially green) can blind them long enough to create critical issues (especially if they were on approach).

So follow this logic:

Chicago has some of the toughest US gun laws to date
Chicago has one of the highest gun violence/gun murder rates in the US
Most offenders already have a criminal history
Our legistators want to fix the issues with MORE laws?

Is this because:

The laws are insuficient ? - Nahhh
The laws are not being enforced ? - Maybe
Criminals don't care about laws; only honest citizens do ? - Ding Ding Ding Ding !!!!!

So in the end this will probably

Increase the black market value on guns
Allow only the "financially successful" drug lords and criminals to afford guns
Assist the most "financially successful" drug lords in getting rid of their competiton
Create more unarmed and defenseless gun violence candidates
Maybe increase gun violence ?

Actually, if you recall the bolt action sniper rifle wasn't powerful enough. What he hid is shoot the propane tank under the helo - creating the fireball that engulfed said helo resulting in pilot and operator demise...

The .308 wasn't powerful enough for the helicopter toward the end of the movie but he used the .50 at the start of the movie to attack the rotor shaft of the attack helicopter.

You are correct, Sir. (Hopefully you realized it was an apparently "failed" attempt, on my part, at sarchasm...sorry!!!)

But...

A pilot, being unexpectedly blinded on approach, could possible not perform well if hit in the eye by a laser (especially those in the 550 nm range)...possibly causing a crash. Thus the guy "pointing" the laser will have effectively "taken down" the plane with a laser.

Anyone have any examples ?

Yup, forgot about THAT helo! Of course, that helps to make the case that ARs (whether 5.56 or 308) aren't strong enough to down the bird. A movie of course, and in the end that doesn't mean anything...
