View Full Version : I love Wal-Mart
Went to Wally World tonight and was going to pick up some ammo while i was there. While standing there, i saw a Ruger 10/22 and while i've shot one before, i never got around to getting one. I figure with the cost of ammo now, i might as well get the darn Ruger and call it a night. Got it for $210 out the door, took all of 15 minutes. Gonna go shoot it tomorrow and zero in my AR, anyone want to go :D
Everything i've read says the Wal-Mart long guns are the same as any other, and i figured at $193 it was pretty cheap. Anyone else have a Wally World rifle?
http://i275.photobucket.com/albums/jj285/glockco/ruger.jpg
That's where I bought my first gun, also a Ruger 10/22 but in the Stainless model.
Not WallyWorld, but I bought one of the last K-Mart guns. They had a sale on their remaining rifles and my dad didn't own a lever gun, so I picked up a Winchester mdl 94 .30-30 (Ranger, I think it was) for under $250. When was this? 4 or 5 years ago? Something like that. It was a major pain in the ***, the hag behind the counter didn't really know what she was doing and seemed disgusted with the whole transaction.
Except for the price, it was not a good experience. Within a week the store didn't have anything but shotgun shells. I suspect they sent the rest of their inventory somewhere.
Sorry, that's the only story I have. I bought a box of .22LR and one of .380acp at WalMart one time, but that's an even less relevant story probably.
I thought it was going to be a bit of a hassle to buy, especially when i saw an older lady behind the counter as i walked up. She was awsome. She asked if she could help me with anything, i asked about the Ruger, she asked if i wanted to see it. I fondled, made the decision, she asked for my ID, pulled out the ATF form, i filled it out, and was on my way in 15 minutes. She was actually very knowledgeable (for a Wal-Mart employee) and it was a pleasant surprise. She even commented how quick this transaction was, said it was the fastest in her 4 years working there.
Besides being escorted out of the store, it went better than i would have imagined. Gotta love Wally World!
I got my 10/22 @ wallyworld for about $130
only "original" part is the receiver.. butler creek and volquartzen (sp?) parts replaced the rest
I have a mossy 20ga from ww and It's still NIB :D
Fancy that, I also bought a Walyworld 10/22 this afternoon.
I've been looking for one for a while and was disappointed to find the 2008 models now had plastic trigger groups and barrel bands. It was hard to tell by looking what the TGs are made of until I figured out all the new plastic ones have a grooved trigger and an extended mag release. Then just by chance while checking walyworld ammo prices I spotted a 10/22 carbine in the display case that appeared to be old school. I checked it out and sure enough I bought it for $193.
Plastic/blued 10/22s are $219 at Sportsman's and Green Mountain.
Here's the weird part, My rifle's SN starts with 351, and the newest prefix listed on the Ruger site is 259 made in 2007. Supposedly all the 2008 10/22s are plastic so I'm not sure what to make of this.
I posted a thread over on rimfire central about this, not much response yet but someone speculated it may be a transitional model. I was wondering if maybe it's a new walyworld special. (there has been a 20” sporter model that's only available at Walmart for a few years)

I post as Spyvie over there and at THR, but I decided I didn't want the same handle as the bad guy from Dances with Wolves so I've been registering as AZFats lately.
How bout that, i got mine today for $193, carbine model, Wally World, and it's SN prefix is 351. Let me know if you hear anything.
I'm planning to shoot mine tomorrow, i'll let you know how it is :D
Congrats.
I've got to say the best part about the 10/22 I bought a couple months ago is buying ammo for it. Just under $30 for 1000 rounds is great :)
Of course I went nuts and the only original part now is the receiver. rimfirecentral.com is an evil place to visit, especially stay out of the ultimate forum over there [Angel2]
Got a marlin .22 tube loaded rifle for 200$ from em. Looks much like a rugger 10/22

Well, I jumped on the Ruger bandwagon and just bought another one. Plain Jane model. I got another one in trade last year from someone here on the board and love shooting it, but it doesn't have iron sights. I wanted to be able to practice marksmanship and found one at Liberty guns in Fort Collins for $150. He also has about 6 Ar-15's under 900 that I lusted over, but could only afford the Ruger. Can't wait to go shoot it.
Went and shot it today. Put 200 rounds through it, with only one failure to feed. This was somewhere around the 180rd mark, so it was pretty dirty, and of course all rounds were fired through one magazine. After cleaning the magazine, i think it was so gunked up it caused the FTF.
Stripped it when i got home and cleaned it. Boy what a pain in the *** it is to get the bolt back in. You practically need 3 hands to hold the charging handle back, and drop the bolt in and position it. That charging handle was impossible to pull back, i needed to use a punch to help pull it back from inside the receiver. Took me about 10 minutes just to get it back. I hope it will get easier as i go. Only real complaint was the black coating was peeling off inside the receiver. Not sure why they even put there, anywhere metal touched, it just flaked off. All it did was make cleaning more time consuming.
It was fun to shoot. I grew pretty bored of the iron sights, time for a scope :D

If you 10/22 owners are interested I received my monthly Midway USA ad in the mail today and they have the butler creek 25 round mags on sale both hot lips and steel lips. Personally I would only buy the steel lips but they are $6.00 off. Look like they are offering only the clear and not the smoke but still decent deal.

Thanks for the link. I think i want some in black though. I definitely found the need for hi-cap 10/22 mags today. Reloading that 10 round mag was a PITA. Who makes the "best" hi-cap mags for these things?

No prob! The butler creek steel lips are by far the best hicap mag for the 10/22. There are also ramline mags that are all black an come in 25, 30 and 50round mags. I am not sure if they have steel feed lips or not. They look like this:

I know cheaperthandirt has then for about $20 but you might look around online. Might also feed the addiction by visiting:http://www.rimfirecentral.com/forums/ there is a wealth of info and links there.
Linky for the CTD ramlines: http://www.cheaperthandirt.com/13266-14038-1043.html
There is also a good book out that is a manual and user guide called The ultimate Ruger 10/22 careful though pretty soon your $200 10/22 will turn into a $1000+ addiction like this:

Not mine but just one of the many insane 10/22's on rimfire central.

Also I forgot about Tactical Innovations they make some really cool mags for the 10/22 that have steel feed lips. The make an all aluminum mag that is very expensive @ $70 bucks but they also have a composite mag for $35. Never seen them in person but hear they work very well and also have completely adjustable feel lips!

Great info, thanks! I think with a few mags, and a scope i'll be pretty happy with the 10/22. Of course i say that now....lol
Kwando: Have you tried any other mags? I could tell right out of the gate, if it gets even slightly gunked up it's going to cause some problems. Like i said i only had one failure to feed, but i attributed that to the gun being pretty dirty after 150+ rounds. Have you tried different types of ammo? I'm certainly no expert as i just got it, but that would be the first thing that would come to mind. Strip it down and make sure it's nice and clean. I was surprised how dirty it was after 200 rounds.

Here's mine on the milder side. I could not bring myself to change out the Mannlicher stock and barrel on it but did change out the usual trigger group action parts with Volquartsen parts.

Ah, you're right up the road from me.
The Thornton store sells long guns, which is where i got mine. (one right off 104th/I25, next to Gander).

I know most of the ones up North here have them.
Does anyone know who the manufacturer of the 'sniper' stock is in the post by Twitchyfinger?
I'm guessing it must be a custom job. After seeing that photo I did some surfing and couldn't find that stock anywhere.
Just curious mostly, but I was impressed with it.

If you are looking for a Mannlicher stock for a 10/22 they are no longer made. I think the stock was actually made by Ruger but am not sure, They can be found occasionally on place like gunbroker and ebay, Here is one that was for sale:

I wish I knew how to attach a pic. It's Snipe1022 in another post of yours in this 10/22 thread.
Looks like birch perhaps, with the adjustable comb and length of pull.
No biggie

Hope that helps...
Yup, that's the one. Thanks for doing my homework for me and finding that. Dang... now I'm thinking I may 'need' a 10/22.

As much as I love to shop at wally world, not sure I'm happy about their latest announcement to "create a computerized log of purchases in a bid to stop guns falling into the wrong hands". Also, teaming up with the "coalition of Mayors Against Illegal Guns". Considering they are the "largest seller of firearms in the United States", have the cheapest firearms, and lowest paid employees, is it a suprise firearms purchased from wal-mart end up in crimes?
I'm all for the retailer trying to be "responsible", but not sure where you draw the line, perhaps a little more training behind the counter (i know then the prices go up).
Unfortunately, both stores by me stopped selling guns, good to know they still have them in thornton. I was actually considering a 10/22 right before the broomfield store removed all their guns. When i had my FFL, wal-mart could beat my wholesale price on the guns they carried.

Ya Wal-mart is a piece of ****. Anything to do with that "waste of space" mayor bloomberg and his little followers in the form of "coalition of Mayors Against Illegal Guns" is pure bull****. When are they gonna go after the real problem, criminals not guns. IMO its worth the extra money to go to a sporting goods store or better yet a local gunshop and support people who support the constitution, Instead of funding those trying to deface it.
Not meant to offend anyone, just spouting my .02
I read about that new video taping of gun purchases by Wally World. I'm glad i got this rifle before that story came out. I certainly wouldn't have bought from them had i known that was in the working.
As for Wal-Mart in general, it's a great store. As a consumer, i enjoy competitive pricing, and selection. Really hard to beat Wal-Mart in that regards to most house hold commodities.
Nice rifle by the way. Those things are addicting. Its hard to leave em stock for too long. There is just way too much cool stuff out there for them!
Here's my new Wallyworld 10/22 transformed a little into a Liberty Training Rifle. I added Tech-Sights, a recoil buffer, extended mag release, some QD swivels on an old refinished stock and a shooting sling. I just need a little glove oil on the sling and I'm ready for the Appleseed shoot this weekend!
BTW, the Walmart at C470 and Bowles has a full firearms dept, and as of last week they still had an all metal 10/22 in stock.

Wal-Mart has announced it will now film its gun sales in the United States and create a computerized log of purchases. The log will also create a record and alert system that will record when a gun sold at a Wal-Mart is used in a crime. Should the purchaser of that gun later try to buy another gun at Wal-Mart, the system would alert the sales clerk who could then refuse to make another sale.
The recorded images of gun sales will also be made available to law enforcement as part of an investigation.
The company has agreed to a 10-point code with Mayors Against Illegal Guns as part of the Responsible Firearms Retail Partnership program. That organization was founded and is led by New York’s Mayor Michael Bloomberg.
Gotta' love Wal-Mart.
