View Full Version : So...I just got my 223 World's Finest Trimmer

I realize I'm something of a new guy, but I need help from someone who has some experience. It says to adjust them using calipers (I have some), but I don't really understand that process and I don't want to jack up a bunch of 223 brass playing "trial and error". I read somewhere that it comes from the factory set at 1.75, but I'm more of a "trust but verify" guy. I'd like to know exactly how its set before I start grinding.

Any thoughts from the experts on how to get my measurement setting so I can get to work? [pick-me]

I'm no help but tell me how you like it. I was thinking about ordering one.

Do you have a case that is already the correct length that you could use to set it up somehow?

I trim to 1.740 and never worry about it again.

Or trim to 1.355 and call it 300 Whisper...

That's what I'm thinking I may end up going with, but this is my only trimmer. So, I'll have to sort through all my brass to find the lucky brass that just happens to be the right length after going through the die. I'm sure there is one, but that seems a bit cumbersome when I'm sure a more elegant solution is available.

That's my plan, I just need to find a way to either set the trimmer at 1.74 OR find a 1.74 case to use as a guage for setting the trimmer. I was hoping there was a more precise process.

I just ordered one. Everyone seems to like them. I'm going to make 1000 pieces of .300 Blackout (sorry, Hoser... I know it's really a Whisper) and was looking for a quick and easy way to trim the cases.

I am thinking of getting one of these.. does it chamfer as well as trim?

No it doesn't. Still needs a light chamfer before seating.

Easiest way is if you have an existing empty case that you KNOW is the correct dimension. The trimmer 'rides' up and down the drill bit that does the trimming and is held in place by two hex screws. Loosen those hex screws so that the trimmer 'floats' freely on the bit - then put the empty case that is known to be the right length into the trimmer and make sure the trimmer fits up against the case shoulder. This particular trimmer indexes off the case shoulder, so you need to be sure when the case is fully inserted into the trimmer, the trimmer is pushed up to contact the shoulder. Then tighten those hex screws. It sounds more difficult than it is.

Let me know if this was not clear and I'll try to clean up the description a bit.

Like a lot of things in reloading, there's a little trial and error. When you start, setting up dies seems daunting. After a while, you won't think twice about it.

If you let me play with your new trimmer, I'll bring you a piece of brass that's the correct length. [Coffee]

You said you have calipers, if they are any good you can use the end as a depth gauge. Measure the end of the cutter to the end of the housing. Write it down. Trim case and measure, if longer is desired loosen set screw and back out cuter the desired difference. Vise-versa

I'm having trouble with my .308 version holding the right depth. I've wasted about 20 pieces of brass already. Is it just a matter of torquing the crap out of the set screws?

Not sure if this helps? Destructions say "retighten set screws equally" also "keep the trim chamber as clean as possible"

If that doesn't work I'd tighten the crap out of it.[gohome]

Better beer? What are you a Hilton sister? I may be lazy, rude and smell funny, but my beer is always quality (and free).

Found my T-handle Allens and tightened the hell of it. Then the battery died after about 50 pieces. I'll finish them off tonight.

All right. Redacted, Doctor Beer.

We started using it last night and it is the bomb! Really quick cuts that are very clean. I did a couple hundred cases and the difference in all of them was at most .001. Out of the box, it trimmed cases to 1.753.

Strongly recommended!

Good to hear. Mine should be here in a couple of days. We'll see how well it works for the .300 Blackout.

Got my trimmer today. Pretty slick. Trims my once fired cases to 1.355 right out of the box. Seems to leave my freshly sized cases about .005" to .006" longer. Guess I'll just readjust for the newly formed cases and see what happens after the first firing.

Gravedigging here, but with a purpose. I've got a .308 WFT that I'll be glad to loan to anyone, especially if they have a .223 to loan back. The .308 is good for all x08 cases like 7mm-08, .260 and .243 in addition to .308

Got my .30 WFT trimmer the other day and am getting ready to put it to use (SW finally got some bullets on the shelf). It looks just as sweet as my .223 trimmer.

Mine came yesterday for .223 and I like it. I still have the Lee setup for the oddball but this is so much faster. Out of the box it trimmed my sized cases to1.744-5 so I am happy. Heck I had made a deal with a guy 2 years ago to borrow a giraud that I had given a heat sealer to for a couple of days rent but that fell through it seems. So now to attack the 1/2 full 5 gal bucket of .223 brass that was ready to be trimmed.

In a little while I need to buy a .308 one and I will be set.

Grave digging an old thread -- Ron did you ever get your 556 working? I am having a pain in the arse time getting mine to actually be consistent.

Nope. Sold it and only use my 243/260/308 one. Good luck
