Never been there, but I did hear a joke about New Orleans, kinda off color though... aw screw it:
The guy who designed New Orleans certainly wasn't a very nice man, he built a city, below sea level, in a region prone to flooding and hurricanes, and then filled it with people who can't swim... Well played! [ROFL1]

I was there a month or so ago.
1- Eat at ACMI on boubon, just off boubon actually on iberville, get the 10 napkin hoagie and the chargrilled oysters
2- Eat at Desire on Bourbob
3- Party at Voodo bar, 3 for 1 bears, awesome live music
4- Avoid the Absinthe bar, doooshy place
5- Book a tour for a Bayou Air Boat ride, super fun and you get to catch an alligator
6- The Cigar factory has some yummy cigars, I tried several and was impressed
7- Now that you probably have a hangover, go back to ACME and get the Fries with the gravy, best medicine for a hangover :)

Have fun

Lived right by there for 27 years. Advice? Do all the tourist stuff (bourbon st, French quarter, see the sights) don't go too far into the city and leave as soon as you can, sorry I don't really like it there haha.

The predators run in packs and have no fear of anything. the cops are crooked as shit. I could go in to detail ,however to loosely quote the AAA guide to LA, specifically NO.
DO NOT GO OUT ALONE AT NIGHT, TRAVEL IN GROUPS OF 2 OR MORE, DO NOT GO IN TO X AREAS AT ALL!!!

French Market for sure, one of the coolest things we did was take a walking tour of the Garden District, the history and architecture is literally unveiled block by block. Take the Trolley out there. Any of the Cemetarys are interesting. Grab a bag of Beignets and a cup of Coffee and walk up to the Mississippi River and chill. Luckily we found out that Bourbon street was a smelly tourist trap the first night and looked for other experiences. Anadrill gave you a great list.

i hate the french quarter , so i usually go to metairie . plenty of food and drink without all the stupid . but if you cant understand the local accent then stay in the touristy areas of new orleans proper.

I went over spring break when it coincided with Mardi Gras back in my naive college days. I had fun drinking under age and saw more tits that week than I've seen in the rest of my life combined, but I recall it being completely inundated with scumbags and transvestites. The crawdad brat I had one night was incredible, but I have no desire to go back to that shit hole.
