I wouldn't do it any later than 6 months prior to travel, and even sooner if a foreign visa has to be applied for the country of travel.

You can do rush processing by paying more, and if you need it real fast you can go to a passport office they have a few around the country, but you have to get an appointment and have reason for it. Mine took just under 6 weeks when I did it years ago and that was back when they had a huge backlog because of the law changes for going to mexico, canada and the bahamas.

I've done it in less than a week, including a business visa to China, but boy, did it cost.

I got my renewal in 2 weeks but they didn't promise any faster than 6 weeks. If you're starting new then you should really go by the Post Office tomorrow and pay for expedited processing. Depending on where you need to go, you may already be too late to get a visa.

You can expedite via denver: http://travel.state.gov/passport/npic/agencies/agencies_2684.html
Of course buyer beware:
When You Arrive
Take the elevator to the 6th floor, Suite 600
You will be required to pass through building security screening and metal detectors
Weapons are prohibited. See Title 18, United States Code, Section 930 (http://travel.state.gov/passport/npic/agencies/agencies_2684.html#title18).
48 hours if you are in a hurry....but the rush entails a fee.

it is when we have to answer this question heading to the store for some milk that we have problems. Not when crossing international borders.

Go down directly to the office in Denver. I did that a few years back, but part of the rush processing back then (may or may not still be true) is you had to have a travel itinerary, basically showing proof that you were leaving the country. Expedited is obviously more expensive but worth it if it means canceling a trip.
Good luck!
