Almost 1,000 people gathered outside the Colorado State Capitol with flags and signs for a pro-gun rally on Saturday.
The rally was one of dozens held at state capitols across the country as part of the first Gun Appreciation day, held just days after President Barack Obama announced a comprehensive package of gun-control proposals.
The crowd gathered on the stone steps and grassy hill on the west side of the capitol as they cheered and listened to speakers. Many held up signs with messages such as "Party like it's 1776" and "Registration is the first step to confiscation."
Alice Gohlke carried a pink sign with florescent letters that read, "Gun free zones are safe havens for criminals." Gohlke, a competitive shooter, drove up from Colorado Springs to attend the rally, she said.
"I'm worried that Obama is going to take my gun away. I'm not only worried as a competitive shooter, but as a woman who would like to defend myself," Gohlke said. "The more laws there are the more criminals there are going to be."
State Rep. Chris Holbert, R-Parker, spoke at the rally. He said in the past weeks he has received several phone calls and letters begging him to address gun control issues.
"The Second Amendment serves as a defense against tyranny and I will not compromise on that issue," Holbert said. "I am not going to compromise on the Second Amendment."
Supporters waved flags and signs along Broadway. Drivers blared their horns as the passed the rally, which lasted almost two hours.
Justin Durnford was one of several people waving a Tea Party flag during the rally.
"We should be able to have whatever weapons we feel we need to protect ourselves," Durnford said. "Whatever weapons we feel comfortable with to protect our families with."
I'm surprised the turnout wasn't higher. It seemed like more people were there to me.
Seemed like a lot of good points addressed today and I was glad to be their along side of everyone else to show my support.
I was there. I wish the tone of some of the speakers were not so confrontational and partisan like. We need to figure out a way to make the 2nd amendment transcend party lines. That is the only way to ensure that no one will go after it in the future. Having speakers that sing songs (off key and child like) about commies, really does not do the best job of conveying gun owners as being all Americans from all walks of life. At times it felt like a walking talking parody and not of something that will make the politicians care. Because if you are considered an extremists, then you are already written off by 50% of the politicians as NEVER mattering to them. Preaching to the extreme choir in dog whistle talking points just marginalizes us in the end. Thankfully one of the speakers that I personally talked to got what I was talking about in regards to that.

I was out there, and found Islandermike. Couldn't find anyone else other than some of the local USPSA shooters (Don Dobyns the guy who arranged it all and Bonnie Ryder one of the speakers are both competitive pistol shooters here in the local area.)
I would have never found Mike if it weren't for that photo of him and the suppressor.
Damn it Ginsue, answer your phone...
Don't forget about the one on Feb 9th too! I hope I'm not the only fool out there ;)
I was there. Seemed inspirational. This is what the liberals who had a march on washington in the 60's must have felt. Except this is for a real cause IMHO.
I attended with another CO-AR15 member. I'm glad those who attended made the time to show up, I wish there'd been a tad more diversity in the crowd, either in age, gender, or race. It felt a bit like looking in the mirror (bunch of middle-aged bearded white guys.....like me).
I did as the video asked and wore a suit. I think I was the only one. lol

Glad to hear it turned out well! I would have gone to one, but I am on a work shift and was sleeping all day.
Still looking for articles regarding how it went across the country and see how it was received as a whole.
We were there. Felt great being out there with everyone as one voice liked hearing the horns supporting the cause from the passing traffic!

I'm sure the Denver post "watered down" the numbers....
...at least they mentioned it. A protest of 10 people with the approved agenda gets more coverage.
I was checking the web for news, and nothing. I do know that 2 people were injured at a gun show in North Carolina.[Shake]
I must not be good at counting crowds. I would have guessed around 300-400 people.

x2. When my wife asked me how many people showed up I stated 'maybe 500'. We NEED MORE PEOPLE to show up at these. Numbers are key. It's easy. You don't have to do anything but show up. Bring the family.

I was there. It was definitely a thousand or more.
I went to the tea party rally in 2009 and it had more people i thought. But this was still a good turnout i felt. I showed up late, didn't see any singing other than the national anthem.

The guy sounded like he had some liquid courage before facing the crowds, and looked like a caricature of the white redneck-gun toting troglodite the left like to picture us like.
Sorry if you are on this board, dude, I do appreciate your intentions, but how do you reconciliate that with the "business suit" deal?

I showed up for a bit. Heard the lawyer and the fellow who had been arrested at the theater. The singing was passable at best. I was also there for the lady who is the competition shooter. Had to leave just after her. Didn't spot anyone I knew.
Was fun and hope the politicians get a clue and start listening to us.
I got there at about 12:20. I would guess the crowd was about 1,000. I was hoping for more but it was more than the last one.

Turnout wasn't bad considering it was 2 weeks notice and mostly word-of-mouth. I don't trust the Denver Post but I don't know where they got their count from and I'm certainly no expert in estimating crowd sizes -- nor could I see the entire crowd as I was in the middle by the statue.

I do not know what to think of the Denver Post. Of all major market newspapers I have subscribed to in my life this one has the most blatantly ideological staff I have seen.
A steal from Wiki, but it is exactly what the DP is engaged in.
Propaganda is a form of communication that is aimed towards influencing (http://www.ar-15.co/wiki/Social_influence) the attitude of a community toward some cause or position by presenting only one side of an argument. Propaganda is usually repeated and dispersed over a wide variety of media in order to create the chosen result in audience attitudes.
As opposed to impartially (http://www.ar-15.co/wiki/Objectivity_(journalism)) providing information, propaganda, in its most basic sense, presents information primarily to influence an audience. Propaganda often presents facts selectively (thus possibly lying by omission (http://www.ar-15.co/wiki/Lying_by_omission)) to encourage a particular synthesis, or uses loaded messages to produce an emotional rather than rational response to the information presented. The desired result is a change of the attitude toward the subject in the target audience to further a political, religious or commercial agenda. Propaganda can be used as a form of ideological warfare."

DP does a very thorough job of using only those images that carry some negativity for any cause that's in oppostition of their own views.

Had a good time at the rally yesterday. Brought my wife and son and another couple (I took the attached pic). I was wearing a dark gray suit with red tie, standing back left of the statue. Got a lot of comments on the sign - the back says "Molon Labe", which surprisingly many asked about (didn't understand it). Good speakers, especially Chris Hobart and Bob. Could have done without the singing guy, tho.
I echo the earlier comment about lots of middle aged white guys with beards - I was just another of em!

It was good to meet all you guys at the Starbucks and walk over - and to meet Irving and Gman at the rally.
I have tons more pictures don't know if I will post them. I purposely tried to not get any COAR-15 people in any of the shots if I could help it (if I knew you were on here).

I despise the Denver Post and its ideological bias but it's no worse than the Baltimore Sun, Washington Post, New York Times, etc. Editorial bias affecting news coverage has become the norm over the past 40 years.
I liked the diversity of the crowd -- families with children, old guys with beards and ponytails, young guys with earrings, you name it. The one thing we needed was more hawt chix but we need more of them shooting in general. [Flower]

Did anyone see that bald eagle that was flying, soaring, just loitering above us?? It was a perfect American moment, it fit so well. If you didn't see it maybe you saw a bunch of us looking up who were standing on the left side of the stairs. That is what every one was looking at. He was pretty high in altitude, but he showed up for us.
