View Full Version : hearing protection?
In need of some hearing protection. Don't want to break the bank, but want to protect my hearing . What are you guys running
foam plugs are by far the best for protecting your hearing and the cheapest. Get a big box and keep in your car so you always have some.
I have a set of Howard leight impact sport. they are enough for .22 rifle and various handgun. not enough for centerfire rifle. They are excellent for power tools though so don't feel bad about buying.

I usually use the foam plugs or an inexpensive pair of over the ear 'muffs. I've thought about getting a nice pair of earmuffs but I can't justify the cost.

Surefire ep4. Inner ear, allowing good cheek weld, very comfortable and reusable indefinitely. Allows you to half plug so conversations can be heard while still muffling background shots. No annoying time of waiting for foam to expand and no annoying bulk on your head

foamies work well and cheap. If going electronic, $200+ is cheaper than paying $3000 for hearing aides later in life.
Sordin or Golden ears get my vote.

I just go to my local Audiologist and get custom fit pugs. Think they run about $120. I literally wear mine every, single day, in and out about 20 times a day......not kidding!!
They last me in rough environment, about 1.5-2yrs., should last for a very long time if just shooting!
[zombie1](and keep them in your pocket incase of a gun fight!!)

The 3M gen 4 plugs are nice. I have been a certified hearing conservationist since 99 and was re-certified in 09. The biggest thing is to have someone fit them that has a clue. The biggest mistake I see is shooters using cheap muffs with glasses or with long hair.
Even with the best protection over time we almost all will get "shooters ear". It shows up as a spike @ 4K on your opposite side. Myself I am prone to using plugs or 28 NRR muffs for pistol and some rifle shooting. Going prone some of the muffs can be a pain.
For .308 I use plugs and a thin set of muffs. I myself have a choice of 4 kinds of muffs and 8-9 types of plugs. The main thing is to find what works for you and use it.

Choice of colors for $1500 - can be tuned to your missing range - like mine - Gunfire! Only takes once to not have the proper hearing protection on.
And doesn't take much for a caliber either - 22LR.

I've gone to doubling up earmuffs over earplugs. I've tried a few different electronic ones but have yet to try a pair that competes favorably with muffs+plugs.

Apparently the sound travels through the bone of the skull so just using plugs isn't as effective as you might think. The muffs are better at blocking the bone-transmitted sound. Some docs will also recommend wearing a hat whenever you shoot to help block the sound from radiating through your forehead and causing hearing loss
Personally I use the Surefire EP3 or 4 plugs (still trying to figure out which ones work the best for me) under a set of Peltor CompTac electronic muffs. So far, so good.
Surefire EP3 or 4! Comfortable, affordable, functional.

SureFire EP3 or EP4 "unplugged" underneath MSA Supreme muffs w/gel cups.
The gel cups are not only more comfortable, they provide a MUCH better seal over shooting glasses.
This combination not only offers outstanding protection but allows me to hear conversations/range commands without issue.
Not the cheapest, but I'll find other places to save money.

Same here except I use the Peltor double ended plugs under my MSA's.
I use a pair of muffs that are probably older than a helluva lot of you guys. I know they date back to to late 70's at least. They've always worked fine for me, but unfortunately I bought them AFTER I'd already been shooting for many years, not mention many years of LOUD rock music, so the damage was already done.
Yes, tinnitus sucks donkey balls. Protect your ears!

I use those Hearos ultrasoft foam plugs. They're the most comfortable I've had, and highest protection rating too.

WTF? They don't provide any hearing protection for tankers? Does ANYBODY in the military get any kind of hearing protection?

Uh, yes. 10 1/2 years on AF flight lines and I never went a single day without hearing protection.
After starting competition shooing, I had multiple sets of custom molded ear plugs with sound channels in them. I wore them while doing convoy in Iraq too. You can always get muffs to put over them, but you really can't beat custom ear plugs.

Mrs Rooski and I were talking about this last night as she doesn't like the over ear I have when we saw this file photo of Chris Kyle on TV.

Anyone know what kind he's wearing? I'm sure they are something fancy and silly expensive but inquiring minds need to know.

and...... I'm sad again.....
Don't know what he was using, but I picked up mine from sportsman's warehouse. blue rubber plugs with red cord. came in a two pack for $4ish. They work great. I've used the surefires as well and like them, but these are pretty handy too...
There's a few guys making the custom plugs see in the picture above. Distributer is http://www.earinc.com/ You can spend anywhere from $60 to $500 on a set depending how fancy you want to be. A simple $60 set will last years and blocks the concussion as well as the sound. I use them for shooting, explosives work, nagging wife, etc...
Surefire EP5's are great. $15 and fit very well.

i have these
http://www.amazon.com/Remington-M31C-M-31-Premium-Earmuff/dp/B000F7P20G
they work great for handgunning. can get in the way of a rifle (or that may be my poor technique). anyway, i like them alot--31db reduction is pretty good for cans, and they are comfortable.

Surefire EP3 or 4! Comfortable, affordable, functional.
This! VERY comfortable, no problem getting a good cheekweld with a rifle. When I'm shooting with other people, I tend to use some $50 electronically amplified shooting earmuffs, mostly so I can hear everything and be safe.
We make the custom fitted ones at our store. It takes about 30 minutes to create the mold and another 30 to 45 mins to polish and coat them.
We charge $65 (and you don't have to wait until the next gun show to get yours done). Link: http://www.shooterready.us/customearmolds.php
