I always worried about running aground while I was onboard ship, sure glad I never had to experience that

That has to be a worse nightmare come true short of coming under attack.

-of all the reefs in the area, why did they have to do it to that one?! (one of the best dive spots in the country).

Don't think "whoops" is an acceptable answer in the navy

But, I'll bet their sexual assault prevention and suicide awareness training was up to date...

It sure isn't the Navy I joined way back when.

One of many things that I know from the year that I was on a ship is that running aground is a career ender. Another one was thank god I didn't join the Navy.

The story said they ran into a coral reef. I knew a Coral in the P.I. But she couldn't take on a whole minesweeper by herself. [LOL]

Sad part is that a Mine sweeper unlike other ships in the navy is a fiberglass and wood hull, they do this so that they don't set off mines with a steel hull. If it was a steel hull they probably could have just backed off, being that its fiberglass/wood I am sure they are afraid of tearing the hull. My bet is they have a tanker/fuel supply ship pull up next to her and offload fuel ad supplies to raise her waterline.

I was on the USS Tortuga (LSD 46) when it ran aground during our MEUEX (or maybe SOCEX) in June of 2002. Fortunately I was a Marine Grunt so the whole incident got filed in the "not-my-problem" category.

Actually, the Concordia was flipped on purpose, and the capt saved a shitload of lives by doing so.

Only part that cracks me up is, it's a minesweeper. Shouldn't they have the best sonar?

Thats all, Just saying!

Only works if you are running in sweep mode, normal cruising and the specialized sonar would be useless. But with GPS and sounding charts I still do not understand how they are maneuvering in areas with reefs
