View Full Version : What to do in Glenwood Springs?

My wife and I decided to do a weekend trip just because we've never been there and to get away from normalcy for a few days. I did go through last elk season, but it was a burrito and a trip to Walmart. Anyway, if I'm going up and staying over a weekend, what should I make sure we see / do?
Definitely have to get a pic by Doc Holliday's grave marker, and I think we're already planning on the vapor caves.
Thoughts / suggestions?

Not sure when you are going, but you could check out the X-games. They start on Thru 01-24-2013 to Sunday 01-27-2013. If you don't like the X-Games then don't go that weekend. It will be very busy in Glenwood beacuse most people stay there for the games (way cheaper the Aspen).

The glenwood caverns are fun if its warm enough. Gondola ride to the top, cave tour, and then ride the alpine coaster thing. Not sure if the other rides will be open, being winter and all.
If you drive the 15 mins to basalt there's a BBQ place called smoke that has some of the best food on the western slope, we regularly drive the 45 mins to go eat there.

Yup! I agree with this! That brewery is pretty good. During Strawberry days, they make a strawberry beer that is outstanding.
Brewery is good. Italian Underground is good. Cave tour is pretty cool. Hot springs is a little pricy, water tastes terrible so try not to get any on your lips on in your mouth, but it is very relaxing! putt putt golf is close by. Always went through there going to junction to play baseball and basketball and watch my sister play softball in college.

+1 for Italian Underground
The hike up to hanging lake is pretty incredible in the summer. Not sure how it would be this time of year but it might be worth looking into.
Yampah Vapor Caves are nice too. Usually quieter than the pool.
Does the Hotel Colorado do tours?

We are staying at the Hotel Colorado.... we'll be there after the end of the month, so X-games is out (huge crowds would probably annoy me anyway). We'll definitely check out Italian Underground and the local brewery.
Thanks for the suggestions, fellas.
Isn't the Hotel Colorado one of those old, historic type hotels? I think that's where my wife booked us. It was summer and really hot. We got to the room and she was warm and wanted me to see what the air conditioner was set on. I just laughed. The rooms aren't air conditioned. Probably wont be an issue for you this time of year though.
If you are the adventurous type, there is a zip-line place just inside the canyon and there is an amusement park with an alpine slide and a giant swing ride. There's a little bar/tavern type place with good food and a cozy atmosphere called "Doc Holidays" where the wife and I like to have lunch. And of course the pool is always a good thing. I was swimming there with the wife one day when the temperature outside was 12 degrees and it was snowing.
There's a pretty popular Mexican restaurant there too but the name slips my mind right now.

Agreed, Hanging lake for me is a must but even early spring was a crazy.. My wife and kids still give me shit and having to carry them through every shaded switch back through the deep snow was a challenge.. Really just a summer deal... I slipped once, there was no chance of injury, had one of the kids in my arms, they bring that up every chance they get..

If you don't know what to do with the wife on a 'getaway weekend', then you've been spending too much time with Little Stevie! [Coffee] Seriously, the hot springs are awesome! +1 to the restaurant recommendations you've received.
Whatever you do, don't book a spa adventure and let them get the order mixed up. Massage Oil + Hutbub + greasy hot sex = frothy, oily, scummy tub and pissed off spa staff. :D

Splendor Mountain Spa was effing amazing. I only did a 45 min couples massage and it was perfect. Theres a place call Pullmans over by the Amtrak station that was excellent. We ended up staying in a marriott for points and that was nice too. If you can book one of the older historic places for the experience.

Hotel Colorado is "historic ". Meaning they don't have to worry about keeping the rooms up. Stayed there last winter. Our room was a sauna. Had to unscrew the window lock and take it apart in order to open it. Had to open it for some fresh air. Our heat would only go down to simmer. Toilet would not flush 1 Kleenex. That was a problem. Had to crap in the lobby head. Floors were warped old wood with cheap carpet plopped over it. Was like a funhouse in our room. I would not have minded all this if the room rate was at all reasonable. It was expensive.
Glenwood and the surrounding area is very cool to look at and hike around ,

I would like to check that out! Any other directions you can offer?
I am up here tonight, love the beer and grub @ the brewery below Hotel Colorado. Soaked in the pool for a couple hours, now sleep! Back on Thursday night! Anyone else up here? Beers?
